Does anyone have GPS Coordinates for The Point, out of Oregon Inlet. Heading there Friday. I was told it is the 580 for Lorans. Is there a good website that has GPS headings?

Look up Jim Baugh's website.

I found Jim Baughs website. He had "The Point" as 35,33.00N / 74'50.50W in 38 Fathoms.
I also have it as 35-32,16'N/074-50,67,W does anyone know what the difference would be?

Its not an exact number, its a general area. Look for the huge canyon with 200 boats going around in circles.

So Jake if I follow 35,33 .00N / 74'50.50W that should but me in the area?

Like said the point could be considered a 1/2 mile square area, the difference in the coordinates between the ones I gave you and the other one is about 300 ft' of ocean, your going to be looking for the geographic "point" which gave the area its name.

See if this helps, one you arrive at the coordinates listed, switchover to depth sounder, when you drop off from 40 fathoms to 250 your there...

See the red dot, thats the coords I gave you, see how you can have many coords same area, not exactly the same spot.

I think Ric got it for you there. There is a really good area to fish along the edge for the ten miles or so north of there too if you have the warm water for it.

Thanks Ric and Jake. Thats helped alot. The warm water looks like it is holdling in that area, packing up now to get on the road around 4:00pm. Looks like weather may hold through tomorrow. Thanks for all your help.

Loran numbers are 26795 and 40595. The tuna hole is about 3 miles north at the 40630. Craige (Mary E) PS Charter captain talk in loran numbers. The 2 line is east/west and the 4 line is north/south.

So I guess you were just born with all of your fishing knowledge, you've never asked for help or learned anything new...Interesting,

Thats a great attitude to have toward someone who is obviously new to OI and trying to get in on the bite.... kudos for being such a contribution to this site.

Does anybody ever catch anything deep-dropping around the point? I know I don't. A few of the times when no tuna/mahi were biting (actually many times when no tuna/mahi were biting), we tried deep-dropping around the point, and got a few little BSB's, but nothing else. I certainly haven't tried the whole perimeter of the Point, so don't take my word for it.

PS
I'm not looking for anybody to reveal their hi-yield spots; I have other places out there I can bottom fish. I'm just wandering if you guys have any luck in that vicinity. Seems like it would be overfished.

Hard to argue that point, and everyone that has a boat should have a chart for the area they are fishing and the ability to navigate back to port if their electronics go down. I will assume that he was at home infront of his computer and all his charts are in the boat which is not close by.

NOAA (http://demo.geogarage.com/noaa/)

now everyone can have their charts on the pc

Nice that folks can assume someone "can't run a boat or read a chart" because they ask a question about GPS coordinates.

Mitigator, A little lesson for you, when you want to come on a web site and ask about a GPS number you have to say you left your chart on the boat. So a Jack Arse like Capt BJ doesn't step up to the plate and make you look like a fool so he can make himself feel smart.

I cant get a chart of ANY CANYON withing 100 miles from me unless I get it on line. So ask away and the second you get to OI get a chart with GPS and Loran on it. When you hear them on the radio for the first time telling someone where to fish you will think they are talking code. We are covered up on the 650 at 40 fathoms. You will need a chart with Loran on it, find the 650 line and follow it out to the depth they said. If you only get one with GPS you will be LOST.

Have fun learning do fish offshore and dont let the Capt BJ know it all computer wise Arse type of people get to you. People on this site have helped my out in the past years I hope they will be here for years to come.

Dave

Hey guys - my apologies for a poorly worded response, I was not intending to make anyone look or feel bad and after reading what I wrote, it is easy to interpret that I did. Just was trying to say not to jump to conclusions, which I did a pretty good job hiding in my response.

Mitigator:

My advice is to buddy boat out there and/or ask some boaters at the ramp if they're headin toward the Point. Probably a bigger thing to pay attention to is that S%#$Y inlet. If you don't follow somebody out of "The Crack" (I think that's the name of it) you will very likely hit bottom and get stuck*. It would be a good idea to follow someone (charter boat, for example) out of the entire inlet, so you'll have a path to come back in on. That inlet is tough. Last time I was there, there were dredges and tugs and floating piping sprawled across the inlet and all that stuff can change position during the day while you're offshore. It sucks to come back and see the pipes and dredge in a different place, very close to, or across the path you came out on.

*See you later. I'm going out in the back yard to re-paint my skeg.

Kayak Fisherman had some really good info in that post. Also be aware of the tide and the direction and size of the seaswell. Avoid @ all costs an ebbing tide with a big easterly swell(mainly N.E.). You do not want to get caught in there @ the wrong time...it can be deadly. Me and Sea Grass(fellow Tidal fish buddy) have been in there in some very messy $hit:eek2:...not a joking matter at all. TAKE THAT INLET VERY, VERY SERIOUS.

Second that,

that inlet can put some hurt on small boats with an outgoing tide and any E or NE swell,

Regarding bottom fishing...I put my Dad on the NC state record blueline tile a couple years ago very close to that little red mark on the chart that Ric put up. Im sure it was dumb luck being the first deep drop we had ever made...

I can jump start you. Tuna, tiles, seabass, etc. Retired, can fish just about any time. Been fishing OI for 30 years. Live on the Peninsula. Have cottage in KDH and a 26 diesel Albermarle. Will fish with you or you can crew with me. Like good weather. Too old to take a beating. Cell is 757-719-3903. PS Have helped several chart captains. Craige (Mary E) OI is usually where I fish, but can help out of Hatteras or VA Beach.

Hey guys
Just a update. We did get out on Friday 10/25, left dock around 5:30. Followed the fleet out of the inlet. They all headed to the "Point" (imagine that). We know have it as a way point. Conditions where great. Got the spread out around 7:30, this was the first time we put it out on our own.Had help last time from Conner(C_Note). Caught some Bonitas. No tuna. We worked all day rigging the ballyhoo correctly. I think we got it by the end of the day. Picked up spread around 3:00 and headed to our tile fish hole. Caught our share of tiles and headed in around 5:15. Cut it close on daylight. It was dark by the time we went under the bridge. All went well.. One thing I did learn about Loran heading on my GPS. I have a Raymarine 120 wide. Now I know what those TD reading are. I always wondered what they where for. Starting to learn the language.
580 at the 50 off the meat hook. I got it now !!! Going to school tomorrow fishing with Bill
(Hit-N-Run/Real Fancy). Bet I learn alot!! As far as looking foolish,, I've done a excellent job all by myself. no help needed. Sorry have to run, it's FRIDAY, I need to get on the road to OI.
Regards
Chuck
