Anyone have any idea why 150 hp Johnson with VRO oil mix system would smoke heavy when starting and idling at low rpm?

In 99 my Dad gave me his old boat. It had a 115 'Rude with VRO. When we took it out on Memorial Day weekend before I brought it home, it locked up. Luckily, no damage was done. (Just sold it a year ago) Had a couple of quarts of oil on board, so we mixed the oil in the gas tank and continued on. The VRO ceased to work. First thing I did when I got it home was remove that d### VRO. If it stops working, you may not find out until the motor is destroyed.

No more mixing gas and oil for me. Last spring I bought a 23 foot Sea Fox with Suzuki 4-stroke power. Love it.
