I'll be in Brigand's Bay for 2 weeks starting Saturday, 10/31 with 21 ft boat. Looking to do some sound fishing, possibly Hatters Inlet too. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looking for specs, flounder, pups or anything that might be "in" this time of year:fishing2:

Here's a chart of the area. Are you familiar with the area around BB. Lots of shallow water but can be easily navigated. Not sure whats happening now but should be some good fishing nearby. We always stay in BB, and have always wanted to get down this time of year - but its hunting season! :D

Joe, Thanks for the chart. I'm a typical Jersey Coast Fluke fisherman, the kind that drift in ocean waters usually 30 to 70 ft. I don't have much experience in shallow waters and the ocean in Hatteras is just too rough for my wife. The wind just never stops........
I've tryed drifting the sound but haven't found any flounder except near the inlet. Last time down (Labor Day) i did get an 18"er by the 15 channel marker.
I was hoping for suggestions on fishing the sound behind BB, but not sure what to try for or how to do it. Any suggestions. I'm not looking for specific spots, I've tryed everything I know that works in Jersey but it aint working in the Sound.
I'm planning on jigs with gulp this time.......
I do catch crabs in the crab traps, along with baby flounder, spot, pin fish and oyster crackers. Even got a shimp off the dock behind the house in BB last time with the cast net.

If you can talk to one of the Locals ,, that live in B.B they may can hekp you out,
I stay there once or twice a year. but trlr the boat to one of the Marina;s at the
end of the Island ,,,
You can fish the inside of the inlet and if it's nice venture on out,
We caught plenty of fish just inside of inlet

1/4 oz jig head with 4" curl tail grubs in assorted colors or gulp shrimp.
Go down to the docks at Hatteras and look to see what the guides have rigged up on their rods. There should be specks and red drum around. There are probably bluefish also. Fish around weed beds, channel edges, etc...
Just hop the jig along, jerking it up 1-2 feet at a time.
If this is something you are going to do often in the future, it would probably be a good idea to go out with one of the guides to learn the techniques, then you can take those shallow water techniques anywhere else with similar conditions.
Good Luck,
Mike

What's your draft on that boat? The sound has alot of shoals and is generally shallow. Be careful back there.

Thanks, Mike, I'm aware of the shallow water. I was there a few years ago when Ophilia blew all the water out of the sound. The picture you posted with the channel markers, had no water in it. There is no channel. When the wind blew out the water you could see how flat the sound is. I could walk around my dock without getting my feet wet that day. Usually it's chest high........:boat:

Been here almost a week now...... lotsa wind......got out yesterday for the first time on the water, found 3 keeper flounder just north out of BB along with a few shorts and 2 blow fish. Also some small sheepshead caught in the crab traps.
Frisco Bait & Tackle is open again for business as of Oct. 1st. The new owner seems very knowledgable and very helpful. He's my "go to guy" now.
Fished off Bonner Bridge Oregon Inlet Wed afternoon for some small sheepshead. Got 3 keepers, just barely enough for dinner..........
If the wind dies, wanna get out to the inlet, either Hatteras or Oregon.....

This is the classic time of the year for specs in the sound near the Hatteras Inlet. There are deeper channels that wind around the sound behind the big dredge island just inside the inlet. If nothing else, follow another boat into the area and pay attention to the route in, so you can follow it back out. Fishing the backcountry on a rising tide is always safer if you don't know the area, so if you get stuck you have a good chance of having the tide lift you off. The water is usually clear enough to help see the deeper water of the channels. The trout are often in 2-6 feet of water, and some nice flounder, puppy drum, and other fish are also in there.
My go to lure there was always a white 3-4 inch twister on a red jighead, but lots of color combos work once you find fish, and everyone swears by gulps these days--but the pinfish and other small stuff mess more with gulps than with unscented plastic. Pink mirrolures are also a classic lure. Check with several tackle shops and try to approach other fishermen for info--most folks on Hatteras are friendly and helpful.

Finally.... Fished the weekend in Hatteras inlet, found plenty of flounder from 9" to 19" with 11 keepers over 3 days of fun & beautiful weather. Outgoing tide produced most of the bigger fish. Cut bait and finger mullet was the key. I can't believe we had 3 days of flat water. The ocean and sound were like a mirror, often not being able to tell where the water stopped and the sky started.......great sunsets too.
Thanks to all........:clapping2:

I'll try the back country tomorrow......... raining this morning....I know just where you're talking about, my chartplotter will handle the trip in & back out. There's a nice hole just west of the sand pile, any luck in there?
thanks for the tip

Charlie,
A number of years ago I fished that area a lot in the fall over several years and did very well on specks and a mix of other fish. I have lost two flounder back in there that were a least twice as large as any I have ever landed. The deeper water near the sand pile can hold fish, but the best fishing is further back in. The areas I have done best in are adjacent to deeper spots back in a bit, often you need to travel a ways thru 3-5 ft water and then you find deeper channels. The specks are often near the deeper water, and sometimes puppy drum are up in the really shallow flats nearby. The flounder are scattered around, but often there are some bigger ones back in there than out in the deeper water--if you hook a big flounder work him gently on a jig, they seem to be able to throw a jig easier than other fish.
The secret is to watch other fishermen especially guides and locals that look like they know what they are doing, and to keep moving and searching--don't spend too much time in a place with no action. Like most areas, the fish feed better on moving water, and those fall specks are agressive feeders.
Calm fall weather is a gift, its great to hear you are doing well. Keep up the reports and good luck!!

I had good intentions of fishing back there tomorrow or later in the week but heard the weather report earlier for the next few days..........looks like I'll have to wait until I return next year......... Pulled the boat this afternoon, hope I can get off the island without any delay......

Left the island on Veterans Day. Even with that, we couldn't get over the CBBT for high winds restrictions. Had to go I-95 around Washington and Baltimore. Pulling the boat in the rain and wind wasn't fun. Anway, here's a pic of Rt 12 just as it approaches Rodanthy, Richard Gear won't be makin any films here.......
