my father has had two. The first had many many hours and was never flushed. UNfortunately out of our stupidity it eventually corroded out ,however it was the finest engine we have ever had. First turn of the key every time for years and in any weather. We liked it so much we got another one with a 6yr warranty. So far this year we have had approx 250 hrs on it and it has run great. It is awsome on gas. I can afford to go fishing a lot because I can run all day on 8 gal. or less ( 70hp). When we trot line we only burn about 4 gal.

A 2006 well maintained engine with 500 hours.. is that excessive?

great engines, no thats not, an MMI student and they had us watch a video of Rick Suzuki, ceo of Suzuki motor corp.( only privatly owned motor corp in world) in this video he states that under average usage 500 hrs. is equivalent to 100,000 miles kind of interesting, seriously no bS

There is some bad information here.
First off, Suzuki is a publicly held company that is traded on the Tokyo stock exchange. The Chairman and CEO of Suzuki is Osamu Suzuki. Rick Suzuki, who resigned back in March, was the head American operations
The idea that 500 outboard hours relate to 100K automotive miles is ridiculous.
I know a lot of guys with 1100-1500 hours on motors that are still going strong. My Rude has 2160 hours and is still kicking. Using your formula my motor has over ½ million miles on it so far.
What percentage of automobiles go 250,000 to 350,000 miles in their lifetime let alone in excess of ½ million miles?

never the less, according to the video that was provided BY SUZUKI stated the info that i posted before and the hrs. related to miles is out of Rick Suzuki. the topic of the video was improvement in the manufacturing and design to make a product with a longer "life span" and better reliabilty

The life expectancy of the average automobile is 120K miles.
So what Rick was saying is that average life expectancy of a Suzuki outboard is only 750hours?
I guess I better scratch them off the list

an automobile is not made of the same quality products and are not designed with the same degree of precision that is required to withstand the marine environment. therefore with proper maintence and care obiviously suzuki is designing/ predicting these engines should survive more than 1500-2000 hrs. on another note Honda marine (another manufacture i am training in). in class we disassembled a powerhead off of a 225 that was donated from the coast guard. before disassembly is was hooked up to the HDS (computer) and checked out, approx.3200 hrs. 70% over 5000 rpms., checked compression it was within specs. proceeded to disassemble powerhead only to find out EVERY clearance in that engine was within spec. i understand this is a suzuki tread but this shows the quality of todays 4 stroke outboards. by no means am i saying handa is a better product, as suzuki produces and sells many more engines yearly. if it wasnt for the uscg and other govt agencies handa might as well give up the outboard side of things

I have a 1983 suzuki DT85 with A LOT of hours on it. Abosuletly love it and will buy the four-stroke when this one is done. Starts easily and just runs like a top. Just flush it after every use. Parts are easy to get STILL!
Not a four stroke like you asked about but top notch in my book.
