1. While on the boat what is the best way to store an umbrella rig when motoring and rods in holder?
2. With an umbrella rig i have been using a 6 oz. trolling sinker. Is that necessary or too big?
3. It seems tandem rigs catch fish. Can anyone explain how to use the umbrella the right way.
thanks,
John

1. I like to just set the umbrella on the floor with the line reeled up to eliminate the slack.
2. I use everything from no inline up to 24 ounce inline.
3. All lures will catch rockfish. Change things up till you find what they want on any given day. My spread consists of 4 umbrellas and 6-8 lines with tandem and single parachutes. They all catch equally. What kind of bait are you using as the trailer/hook bait for your umbrellas? I use 2 ounce parachutes with 9" shad when the big fish are around.

I normally only have 2 umbrellas in my 14 rod spread and they are deep dropped. This past spring all my fish were caught on single and tandem rigs but last fall umbrella rigs are all they wanted. IMO tandem rigs are the way to go, you feel more of the fish than the drag of an umbrella.

you guys are awesome. I can't imagine managing more than 6 lines. I have just started learning to troll and i already have my hands full with snags re-rigging, fish, etc.
Next Questions:
1. Best time of day. I have been fishing near Carters Lumps and also down the trench outside of St. Clements.
2. Any other good areas to troll in that stretch of the river.
3. When do bigger fish arrive. So far in my carreer my largest is a 28 inch.
thanks,
John

I have found a great way to store your umbrella rigs. Go to lowes and get you some shower pan liner and then buy the glue for it. Cut the liner into squares so that u can fold it in half and make a bag out of it. Take the glue and glue the long side and one of the short sides. Put something on top of it and give the glue time to dry. After that, now u should have a bag that u can slide the folded up umbrella rig in. This works great for me because they store easly without taking up much room. Just thought i'd pass this along. I also see people use pvc tubes but i don't have the room like others may have to store them. Good luck fishing!!!! Your bigger fish come in around Thanksgiving.

I trolled Friday from #9 almost across to the Maryland shore line and back. Two 12" umbrellas on 24oz and 20oz inlines and 2 tandems higher up in the water column. 4 fish-nothing big. 2-18" 1-21" and 1 22". All 4 caught on the umbrellas.

I lay the umbrellas on the deck or remove them
The sinkers are all about where you want your lures to run....Always have the lightest weight on the longest line...weight increases as the lines get shorter
EXample 200 ft out 1 oz, 175 ft out 4 oz, 150 ft out 6 oz..etc etc....Use levelwinds if possible..this will help with the amount of line out...that way you can put the lure back in the same place after you have to bring the line in
I usually run single and tandem parachutes off the boards and and umbrellas on the boat rods

Go to lowes and buy a section of 4 inch round pvc pipe. They also sell the end caps. drill holes in the pipe so it can breath and then cut it to lengths of about 24 inches. glue one cap on and leave the other unglued. store your umbrelas that way
