We got quite a few in Surry. But ain't seeing that many. What's the logic for no blackpowder in Southhampton?

I'd like to know the answer to that as well. I hunt off millfield rd on skyline dr and i sure wish they'd allow blackpowder during these 2 weeks. In the 3 years of hunting this property i have had to sit and watch a few nice bucks chase does right through the woods by me and around me and there aint no stopping these boys and getting a shot with a bow.

In MD you can use a muzzle loader during shotgun season and many do. I have a Browning A Bolt slug gun and it is VERY accurate and hols three round. Hard to get a second shot off with a muzzle loader..............Gary

It is all politics in Southhampton. The City board is made up of farmers that are in the fields harvesting during black powder season. They dont want to see all the big bucks killed when they have to work. They want them saved for shotgun season when they can hunt every day.

Post up the address and I'd be glad to help bring down the population numbers a bit. You get first pick of the harvest.

never hunted black powder myself, so i dont keep up with it......i dont even eat em any more. i did put a nice 4 point in the freezer last week - just to have meat on hand to give away to friends who want some, kinda like having beer in the fridge but dont drink it.

I have not seen the MD stats on the kill this year. It will tell a pretty good story but not the whole story. I don't think that hunters will ever control an over population of deer. There are MANY no hunting areas and less hunters every year. I still see the deer population growing and out of control. Coyotes are not a factor yet and the winters are still mild. Disease is the only way the herd will fall. Hunting has been VERY good in MD for the past 25 years.......Gary

You hit the nail on the head. I hunt in Southampton. Its all about dog season there. They were very slow to accept bow season when it got really popular. I dont think it is as much of they are working during black powder season, its just they want to kill them running dogs. Basically every piece of land in Southampton county is hunted by a club that hunts with dogs.

Any one here a member of the "Southampton Bowmen" hunt club? I bet they love dog season!

Jamie,

Its not just that buzzards that are eating well. Took this on Sunday in IOW County just outside our subdivision as it fed on a road kill doe.

The pic is not all that good because it was pouring rain and a little foggy.

Thats right, southhampton farmers and landowners are the ones that make dont want this and I cant say I blame them as much as I would love an early shot at a bruiser ou there. It is one place where outsiders havent taken over and aas long as they can hold their farms never will. Most of the farmers and landowners are houndsmen and have been for several generations and thats how the like it.I think they should leave it up to the clubs or leasees to decide to allow blackpowder hunting. good huntin!

I think most of the mast crop acorns etc are depleted and they are now heading for the fields for food, Those deer are have been there all season just have been feeding out of sight

thats BS, i think your talking about farmers on the western shore because that is not the case over here on the eastern shore. The farmers just want them gone, big, small whatever it is.

Thats where there talking about the western shore if thats what you call it,its funny because folks on the shore hate dog hunting from what I hear farmers and all but at the same time they want the deer killed well good luck!Stay on the eastern shore because thats how we roll on the western shore.turn em loose.no offence to the team realtree hunters!!!:D
