Have a 88 Johnson 110. There is an electric component that sits partially under the flywheel, back side of engine on top. Mine flamed out today. Luckly not far from ramp. Had turned off engine to begin to fish and everything seemed OK other than I had noticed the electric gauge was in the red when I shut her down. Anyone know what it is and its function? Tilt and trim worked at ramp when I went to put the boat on the trailer .Tried the starter and the engine kicked over also. Didn't try to start however. Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the regulator/rectifier. Make sure the stator has ac output 1st.

not sure what would burn out and leave you running. post a picture and we'll figure it out.

The regulator/rectifier only controls charging ... it has nothing to do with running. Now, if what burned out is the power pack, the motor clearly won't start. If you don't know what this stuff is, take the motor to a pro.
They are the only electrical components at the top rear of the motor.

Thanks guys for nthe replies, have learned it was the voltage regulator. I understand that I need to check the stator also for malfunction that may have caused the problem.
