Was at Bass Pro Yesterday and was checking out the Captain's Choice reels and rod & reel combos. I like their one piece frame and the pole poles have decent hardware. Anyone tried them yet?

nope
who makes them?
most "other name reels" are really made by the regular guys and just rebranded

The young guy at BPS said that Pflueger (sp) makes them, however I was just reading the reviews for them on BPS's website and a guy on their says they're marketed in Europe under Abu Garcia's name. They're getting great reviews so far. I may get one and see how it holds up.
I would prefer to a Aftco roller on the rod tip though. $109 for the combo.

I bought a small bait caster this year looks like an Abu... works good so far. drags ok but the release is a little sticky. I use it for bottom fishing and flounder... got a few keeper flatties with no problems... not the highest quality feel..not an Abu but works.. only payed $29 on sale...can't beat that...even if it only last one year... don't know about the bigger stuff

Bass pro reels are made by Penn who was bought out by Shakespeare a few years ago. Since, production has gone to China!!! Likewise with Abu Garcia, they are no longer Swiss made but now Chinese. One of the reps at Greentop informed me.

I tell ya we better start learning Jap/chinese.....I don;t have that reel or rod but have been wondering the same myself. But what I have seen with anything that has the Bass Pro name as a brand with everything that I have tried honestly is junk, please I am looking to argue that is just what I have seen. It looks like the put out to the lowest bidder. Same thing sears does or used to with their lawn equipment.

I bought a captain's choice rod reel combo last year. Used it for trolling. Worked fine especially for the money. Headed out in a few minutes with it - will let you know if anything breaks

I thought that's what you meant. Are there any American made trolling reels out there?

stick with the Penn 320's. I have used 4 for 6 years now, no problems. You can get them with a deent 5.5 or 6' outer banks outfitters boat rod with roller guides for around 125.00 at local tackle shops. At least you could last year at BW before they went belly up.

What you have to think about is if they break will you be able to get someone to fix it. A friend repairs reels and has some that need to be fixed. When he called BPS they told him they don't have replacement parts. Just something to consider.
Not all BPS stuff is junk. You just have to know which is and which isn't.

I just bought 3 penn 330's at Green top to go with my 320's and they let me have them for $85.00 apiece. Hard to beat for the money. I still like my 309's just as well too though.

My 113's are my workhorses on the boat during Striper season. Just curious if anyone had any experience with them. The one piece frame is appealing.
