850 rpm's on different boats is a different speed. I try to stay "near" 3mph on my gps. 3mph across the current may lead to 2.7 against current or 3.5 with current. Hope this helps. 5th (Marty)

On the troll, if trolling is what we must do, we go as slow as my (outboard) boat will go...that's generally 1.7 - 3.0 mph per Garmin. Current, wind, and sea conditions dictate some of the variation. Saturday, we hit the 'sweet spot' it seemed at 2.2-4 mph on a southbound troll and caught 8 healthy ones (22") out from wndmll pt. Fishing at a faster pace on the northbound troll, we caught nothing. Trolling east to west in direction, the boat rocked so much that we weren't comfortable, so that wasn't acceptable...

I troll 2 three-way rigs off the stern w/24 oz mojos as drop sinkers (one white, one chartreuse) and a white bucktail and electric chicken calcutta 6" behind on the 3-ways.

Off the sides I troll umbrella rigs, one bunker color design and the other chartreuse.

Keep it simple, make it fun.

Ditto with the slow as you can thing. I had a captain of a charter boat tell me that they produce fish when we can't cuz the can go slower. We also travel from 2.5 to 3.5 sog (speed over ground). Fish on saturday seem to be hitting when we turned . Inisde part of spread was producing. Would lead me to beleive that even slower was better.

all is true about being slower the better, here are a few tricks you can use to help keep your speed down. One is to use 5gal buckets, drill holes to tie on rope and don't use the handle. next is a drift sock, and there is also a thing called the happy troller..

Sunday was going south at 0.9 knots. Nothing going north, east or west. Even slower may have been better but that's as slow as we could go.
