The story will come alter. I shot this monster in the wind and rain. Had to go back this am and find him. He was 70 yrds from where I hit him. I am off to the taxidermist. This was a great hunt very active in the pine thicket yesterday. Needless to say I could not sleep last night. I have some shots from the woods I will post later. He is a bruiser...

Beautiful deer:rockingreport: It pays to go out in wind and rain because they won't come in your house. I have found that they move during high winds but only in some thick cover and you were there. Congrats........Gary

I went down to the farm to check on the impoundment. I decided to go back and check things out so I suited up. The woods was completely flooded out. The front of our farm is really thick and part is about 10 year old pines. I snuck into the pine thicket and set up where I had seen some scrapes last weekend. This guy had scraped and rubbed this part of the farm to death. I made a make shift blind with some pine branches and started rattling. The wind was not very bad in the thicket. I had a small scrub come in almost immediately. I sat for about 25 or so more minutes. I was about to move as three does came through the thicket at a fairly fast pace. They went about 10 yards past me. I saw him about 45 yards away coming hard on the does trail. I eased up on my knees and drew back as he was about 30 yards. He crossed over a row of pines and hit the brakes he was looking right at me. He could not make me out but was staring directly at me. It was far from the shot I wanted but I drove the arrow right into his front brisket. He reared back and spun the fletching barely sticking out of his chest. He crashed down a few times on his runaway. His front leg stuck straight out. I knew he was hurt bad. I eased out of the woods and got myself together. I looked where I had shot him not a speck of blood. Instead of pushing the issue I came back this morning with my lab to go find him I knew he was dead just not where. Hunter was running around chasing rabbits and he was not much help. However, as I eased up in the pines I saw him in the thicket tail wagging going crazy. I went over to him and sure enough there laid the big boy in a pile. He is the second biggest buck I have ever shot. I was pumped to have gotten him with a bow. The deer are rutting in full swing. I went in the only place I could think of to get out of the wind and it paid off.

Great success story! I have hunted with this exact same theory in the past, but never saw bubba. This will help convince me to keep trying in those thickets. Thanks for sharing! So you hit him quartering towards you?

wow- thats an awesome animal. I've never taken that shot but I've always thought that it wasn't a terrible shot, just unlikely to get a nice passthrough with a good blood trail.

thanks for sharing the story!

Wow. You couldn't expect better in Iowa, Ohio, Kansas or some other famous place for whitetail. That's an absolute giant. I hunted in that weather on Friday too. I set up over a thicket in a tree and didn't see a thing. I thought it might have been the wind and rain but the night before in similar conditions I saw lots of chaising while driving around at night. When it's on it's on. If you only had two weeks to have sex, would you let a little wind stop you? Probably not. Congrats.

When hunting thickets, how do you know where to set up? It's a thicket and there's hardly anywhere to get a clean shot unless you spend a great deal of time clearing out branches. I usually refer to thickets as young trees with lots of vines and invasive thorns and what not. I don't have access to pine stands but have always thought they are perfect habitat for deer to get out of the wind.

Were the thorns and vines not that bad, just thick with pines and not much else? I've got to try that sometime.

Dorchester County boys.. The thicket is a major bedding area. I just got about 20 yards in from the hardwoods and could see down the rows of planted pines I have cleared the branches in that little area before. I keep a lot of corn close to there to keep the does around..Honestly, I think I just got real lucky. I have been after this deer for a long time. I have seen him maybe 3 times prior but only quick glimpses. He was a smart buck completely nocturnal except the rut.
