Hey splitshot, you guys ought to come with Fisherman and others out to CBBT (not far from there,@ ocean view) i am not an expert by any means, but we do get into some fish out there. I pulled one striper from ocean side of lesner last week, so there are fish in there too. We usually go out after dark, under the bridge lights. It is a great time!

Ususally you will see a post by "Fisherman" saying we are shooting the bridge (CBBT or HRBT) . AS far as lights go, i have a c-light on a pcv pipe that mounts onto one of my rear rod holders. Scotty makes a really nice one ( i copied it cause i am cheap[grin]) for 30 bucks, they sell it at wild river outfitters. Kevin and i both have them, they are visible for thousands of inches....lol. A headlamp to see your lures when tying on is nice too. Otherwise you can see under the bridge lights pretty well too.

I dunno, i moved here is august, they were here then.....but i am sure as soon as the water gets mid 50s, there will be better fishing in the inlet.

It isn't like fishing the bridges is rocket science. Kevin has been at the hrbt several nights this week by himself. Tom and I were out last night. Fish were caught.

18, nice looking rigs. I know you are into surf fishing but get ready to catch about 300% more fish from that kayak!
See you out there. You guys need to try HRBT or CBBT. Just pick a calm night. I'll be looking to go next week.

Do not get those little orange lights they sell at WRO. They suck. The boats won't beable to see you. They can only be seen when they are perfectly straight. Evidently whoever made them had never seen waves before.

I got an LED light at boater'a world for $24 and change i believe. I have modified the mount and put it on 1/2 inch PVC to get it above my head. I am not finished with the mount yet as I am re-rigging my yak with a new crate and bag. The light I bought runs on AA batteries and should last for several trips before I need to change the batteries.

Goby have you ever seen one on a yak? Kevin and i both have them, i can spot Kevin's very easily from a long way out, and that was in some pretty good waves. The lens on them make a beam that shines most of the light to the side, the farther you are away the less direct you have to be to see it. If a boat is close enough that he is out of the beam, you are already run over.[wink]

If the orange light Goby refers to is the ACR Safety light then I understand his criticism. I guess it is better than nothing, but it does seem rather anemic.
The manufacturer says it is visible up to two miles but I would bet that would be only under ideal conditions. The way the light is focused makes it only visible if the other person is viewing it at the right angle. I think the challenge is to get something bright enough to be seen at a good distance no matter the angle and making sure it isn't too bright so it doesn't mess up your vision.
I use one but I definitely hope to upgrade to something a bit more effective.

Whatever light Cory and Darryl have suck. Even they complain about them.
I bought a waterproof flashlight from Walmart about 4 years ago when I started fishing from kayaks that has a bulb that can be moved up to make the light into a "lantern". It is bright as hell, but even with 4 AA batteries in it, it won't last a night of fishing the bridges.
Tom has a basic boat light on his yak and it seems to last all night.
I've been poundering a new type of light that would have a battery source down in the boat instead of up in the light...that way it would keep your center of gravity low.
Whatever you plan on getting, make sure you bring batteries.

I got a battery-powered nav light from Kmart for ten bucks. Works.

Its not just rough stuff. If that light isn't perfectly straight up and down it can't be seen.
Either way, I think it is also important to bring at least one other light source and have it handy to point at coming boats. I keep a light on my head. I don't always have it on, but I can turn it on quick to warn a boat of my presence. I also carry a waterproof flashlight.

thats a good idea.............i guess you can never be too safe on the water

Yeah, a Super LED headlamp is a awesome investment... they are great for tying on lures, battery life is amazing, and can be used to signal should the need arise. The one i got has a red mode too wich lets you see without losing your "night vision".....works well.

I have to agree with Naked Goby. I had that light and its great for a prefect setting but its hard to see anytime you are bouncing in waves. I now have the basic light from Walmart/Super K/ Bass Pro that takes a couple of "D" batteries and last forever. I took the mount off the Scotty light and added it to the new, cheaper light and it works great. The Scotty light is a good light for your PFD and such but was not the best application for a kayak. Though Scotty promotes it like that. There are other ways to get less expensive lights that will do the same thing for less $$$$. So shop around and see what you can find.

Glow sticks are useless.
I have a battery powered boat light that you can get at boat US, Boater's World, WalMart, etc. It takes 2 D batteries. I change them every 2 trips. It puts out alot of light. I had to modify it with a longer pole but it works great.

Thanks, vpvboat. What's the brand name of that light? I have plenty of lights but I want one to go on a 3 foot post in a rod holder.

I think mine is a SeaChoice which is cheap. The ones at Boater's World are better. I got mine at Robbie's Hardware in Portsmouth before they closed up.

Report in the Fisherman Magazine said that specks and pups had shown in Rudee. Worth checking out.
