View Full Version : Question Wreck Numbers...

Let me start off by saying that I know this is a touchy subject.
Good numbers are hard to come by and are not very frequently given out.
I would like to get a general impression from those of you who have looked up numbers on different websites.
Have any of these numbers put you on good bottom marks?
The sights I have found include: Chesapeake angler, Jim Baugh outdoors, and various dive sites.
Before I want to start recommending numbers I have found on the internet to people I’d like to know if there is even a chance that any of these numbers will produce.
As I am currently a permanent HO, having a couple proven numbers in your pocket can be a valuable commodity.
I just want to know if it is worth it to leave the dock with numbers from these sights having that be the only plan for the day.
Thanks!
No always have a backup plan even with fished on numbers

No...I would not rely on those numbers. A slight error can cause you to drive in circles and never find anything

When I started taking my boat to the Triangle wrecks I took every number I found on the sites you mentioned............carefully plugged them into my Garmin gps..........spent hours looking for them........and then I'm pretty sure I cussed them all.
Some of the numbers are close but you WILL have to search. Don't expect to run up on the coordinates and wham there it is. The only way I had success with any of those numbers is running a box pattern search from the original mark.
Good luck

Hate to say it but the best way to get a good number is from another angler willing to give it up or by hitting MOB when you pass someone pulling something off the bottom.

The BSB are all over the wrecks now and biting just about anything you drop down. This closure sure does suck.

Some people are just more generous with their honey holes than others. Personally I don't believe in keeping secret spots for too long. Once I have fished a place a few times I will tell anyone who asks. Getting a thank you and seeing pics of fish they have caught from them is every bit as satisfying for me as if I went there are caught them myself. If I were feeding my family based on what I caught I might not, but I don't know anyone who relies only on their catch for food. Life is too short to keep spots to yourself. I catch plenty of fish all year long and there has never been a shortage of places to go...Sharing is just another way of enjoying our sport.

I told him the Flounder were biting there now. Thats good information isn't it. He knows now that he can go there and catch something he can keep.Unlike the Seabass.
My other point was the numbers didn't need to be put on here to share with the INDIVIDUAL. All of the locations are OVERFISHED as it is. I share spots too just keep it a little more private. Posting them here for ALL to see is Mikes choice. He knows exactly what I mean and my Lou comment was in fun; He knows that too. LIGHTEN UP BRO!!

It's not like those are "Secret Spots" for crying out loud. Go buy a decent chart online and you can get numbers for the more popular wrecks like the Hanks, Santore, 44 fathom.....etc

I had planed to go to each of these spots and fish each one until there are no fish left in the ocean....now that I have the numbers I can do just that.
Chill out guys. This is what makes TF worth looking at for a novice. Chances are if you are good enough to effect that actual fish population at a specific place....then you already have the numbers.

To the origional question, no dont take internet #'s out there as game plan #1:wacko: Most of those Chesapeake Angler #'s have been converted from Loran to GPS, and to my knowledge, there is no good formula to convert them........They are normally way off. It's hard finding a 250' in a 1/4 square mile:yes:. Sometimes if I am fishing wrecks in a certain area, and have ''Maybe" wreck #'s close by, I may spend 1/2hr trying to find that wreck, since I'm already in that area. But you need to plan your day around "Known" #'s.

Yes, agree with Smells, the Chesapeake Angler and Jim Baugh numbers they post on the interent are 90% crap. They seriously should just take them down as numbers that far off are almost impossible to find. Yes they will get you close and you may get lucky enough to run over the top of the wreck then you got a number but it's a long shot to find the wrecks using thier numbers. The numbers on VMRC reef page and the numbers on the PSWSFA.com page are good. I didn't really think I was giving away any secret spots. These are the well known wrecks with numbers that have been different sites for years (just don't use Chesapeake Angler and Jim Baugh #s). Many of the fish that inhabit wrecks are migratory with the exception of togs. Which means you really can't fish them out for flounder, seabass, bluefish, spades, jacks, etc. Deep dropping offshore is different. Most of those fish do not migrate so they can and do get fished out. I won't post deep drop numbers on the internet. And I won't post lesser known hangs I found or numbers given to me by friends. Tidalfish should be about helping people. I've received a lot of good information on tidalfish so just want to help out when I can.

Kinda have to hit you with the BS flag here, you gave easy known sites so you can be a hero/good guy to the neophyte wreck fisherman and keep them from your true sites that produce. With the exception of two of the sites you listed they are heavily dived and on any given weekend during the summer you can easily catch a vessel on it with a dive flag up or fishing. :nono: Like I've said before, new wreckers can't find them unless someone tells them/shows them where they are and old wreckers ain't gonna tell you where they go. Just a taste of the BS stuff.

Hey dickhead. Why don't you stick your BS flag up your dark sinky place. Why do you have to label anyone as trying to be a hero or neophytes? Not trying to be a hero, just one angler helping another. Perhaps your vision is blury reading posts with your goggles on but if you take them off for a moment you will read that I said they are known sites. What's the deal with all the hate man? Are you one of the legions of tidal-idiots who only post to flame others and never contribute.

I do not have to go to name calling to prove my point, you only posting known sites and not any of your true stuff is not being helpful but just want to be a good guy hero to those who do not know any sites hence they are a novice/ neophyte no disrespect just the truth. A private email to the guy would have been enough, but then you would not have been the good guy to ll the novice, I could see that with or without the goggles/mask. No I do not flame and yes I have told a few things but experience has showed me I do not need to wave my dick around to know just out big it is. I tend to keep quiet and share with those that deserve it. Please enjoy your retirement.

You can always post your "favorite numbers" and move to the front of that DMV line. Bet you won't do that, you would certainly lose any hero status among fishing buddies. But you can always prove me wrong. Game? I'll help you...... Post the numbers to any wreck you want and I will tell everyone if it is right or not, I won't give them up you will do that. I will just confirm them. Come on hero lets help out them novice.

Well, I would help you out some, never on a public forum. You remember I wouldn't even give up the numbers to the wreck I had Jim go to that day when the bite was off on everything else. Now that I've known you a while it would be different, but there are numbers that I could never give up as they were passed with extreme rules and my word. I would confirm them if you asked but I could not give those up. There are no secret wrecks, just those that don't know about them. FWIW NOAA is in the process of exposing every known wreck site to google earth with correct numbers, I have seen the program. May be a few years yet. Imagine what will be going out there........striper season offshore. :eek2:

It is more unbelievable how you can't understand that posting wreck numbers here to areas that have been OVERFISHED (NOT FISHED OUT); as a way of good will to others that might not be as up on these areas as others. Yes these are easily obtainable if you do a little research. Why not let them do their homework? The learning portion of wreck fishing will take them a lot further and they will become better at it from their own explorations and experiences. Three years ago these areas would have been great to share because the guys your trying to help out could pull up on them and catch QUALITY fish in good numbers. Now go there and your throw back ratio will 70% more than your keepers. Is that really good information? I actually feel kinda bad knowing these guys are going to go there with high expectations; spending lots of money in the process and find out for themselves these spots have been hit hard. If all they want is practice venting fish; maybe you should go over that too, I guess they'll be happy.
As I stated earlier; I have helped numerous INDIVIDUALS with wreck numbers, just not on the open forum. That is what PM is for. You can call me all the childish names you can come up with; JACK is very easy to make bad names out of, try thinking a little more and let your creative inners come out like ANAL CAVITY PARASITE. See that actually takes some thought; doesn't it?
