Horton is a great writer. I've drank some beer with him. Good guy. I have been invited on some of his kayak cruises and always had something else going on. One of their trips they go across the lower eastern shore islands, crossing the straights and they guarantee someone will flip over.
When I used to work for MDDNR, I got to see spawning rockfish. Simply amazing. You know something is up from the smell in the air even before you leave the dock. Before the sun comes up you hear the thrashing of rockfish on the surface. As the sun starts to rise you see the sheen on the water from all the rockfish sperm and the glistening of the eggs in the sunlight. Then out the corner of your eye you see a 40 something inch female roll over on the sruface with about a dozen males bumping her body...eggs and sperm flying. It is really an interesting sight.
