I started this journey by contacting CB Boatworks. I had a sketch and a list of ideas to build a small carolina style boat to river/flats fish the Chesapeake Bay and watersports with the family. I wanted the boat to have seating for 6, fore and aft decks for flats fishing, plenty of rod and dry storage, livewell, and have enough freeboard to be safe for a family. Well what we came up with met all the criteria.
I have completed the base, jig stations, and dry fit the keel and stringers. I hope to laminate the keel and stringers and assemble the jig this weekend.
I would like to have this complete sometime during next summer. I do work a full time job and am a father of 2 girls. So, I'll work on it when I am able.

No, it was not me looking for plans. I have wanted to build a boat for 20 years. The time was never right. So, now with a family, I want to be able to teach my girls how to fish and have fun on the water. I have fished out of Oregon Inlet for the past 27 years. And I just love the look of the Carolina boat. Nothing out there any prettier.

Great looking rig. Are the mold stations cnc cut or did you loft and cut?

The jig stations, keel, stringers, transom, and bulkheads were CNC cut.

smart looking hull, what are you building it out of, I saw you were ready to laminate the stem and keel, what type of wood are you using , what will the hull skin be made from? I have seen a few of the designs by cb and now you can tell us how they go together. if they float were they suppose to and so on!, great project!

The keel and stringers are Aquatek marine plywood. The gunwale, sheer clamp, chine and battens will be douglas fir. The bottom and sides will be 2 layers of 1/4" Okoume ply. Then will be glassed inside and out with 1708 biaxial glass. With 2 layers of glass on the outside.

Got the stringers and keel laminated this weekend. Also, got the jig stations and bulkheads set. Next, is to tape the jig stations so the resin will not laminate them to the hull and set the keel and stringers. Then I will need to cut and laminate the the chine and sheer. Thus far, this has been relatively easy project.

Tom,
Looking good. I know you will do us proud!
Captbo: Thanks for the "smart looking hull" comment. Tom is a great guy to work with. He knew what he wanted and our thoughts and his came together naturally. If you are looking for something that you just can't seem to find, give us a call.
Safe Boating,
Marc

Wow, you are moving out and it looks so good. I like your material choices a lot and your plywood platform is nice. You can make a form-fit V-style set of bunks using 2 x 4s covered with carpet for when you flip her over.
Jim,
Actually, CB Boatworks already made me a cradle when I picked up the jig and building materials. It will be a cradle with the supports running beam to beam. It was CNC cut and will match the hull bottom perfectly. Again, CB has been great to work with and certainly go out of there way to help.

Sorry have not posted recently. Saturday the 5th I was cutting the chine, battens, and sheer clamp on a table saw and somehow 2 of my fingers met the blade. Everything still attached, just needed many stitches. Needless to say, it will be a few more weeks before i can get back out there.
Wow, lousy luck! Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery! - Dan

Jose,
That Redfish flats is a great boat. That is what I was originally looking at building, but I wanted a boat with a little more freeboard and seating so we came up with the CB17. PM me if you have any questions. Marc and Gene have been great to work with.

JimRockfish,
Thanks so much for the "beautiful lines"! Donnie and Tom have also been a pleasure to work with. I look forward to our continued involvement with these talented guys.
The "incredibly fast" is a combination of our hard work and Donnie's. Our newer boats have even more "fast build" options than Donnie took advantage of. We are working hard over these holidays to add all of the "fast build" options to our previous "kits". It is our intention to produce jigs / "kits" where each individual can balance between time / cost by choosing between fabricating components onsite or buying CNC-cut components from us. The jigs will accomodate either.
We should be rolling out the updated line around the first week in January! Keep watching our site.
Thanks again!
The guys from CB Boatworks

Was able to get back out this past weekend. Got the jig all taped so the stringers and plywood wont stick. Will work on shaping the keel and bulkheads later this week. I will post some more pics then.

I was able to get a bit more done over the last couple days. I have been spending most of my spare time fixing up my mother-in-law's home to sell. I will have another 6-8 weeks doing that. Meanwhile, I did get the second layer of chine installed, stringers & keel glued to transom, and made my gunnel boards a little wider and longer for better support/gluing surface for the sheer band.

It has been a slow process, but I continue to move forward with this build. It has been a joy to be able to. I have all but the port side glassed/flood coated. I hope to get that done this weekend.
