OK...gotta bite the bullet to go offshore needing more gear...got 4 TLD 15, 4 TLD 25 and now I need 4 50 class reels to go with the 4 Brand New Chaos Roller Guide Rods I got for my B-Day...I've got a deal on 4 used ( in good shape?) TLD 50 2 Speeds at $300 each ( I see they are $329-359 on ebay new) or I can go with 4 New Torium 50s for $229ish each with free shipping...
Is the TLD that much better?
So whats the concensus? TLD or Torium?

Get the tld50's....
nothing wrong with the torium 50, but the tld is a better reel(lever drag, better constrution over all) than the torium.

If your primarily bottom dropping go with the Toriums. If your trolling then the TLD's

They're two very different reels. TLD 50 is much bigger and bulkier. It's made for trolling/chunking.
The torium is a high speed star drag reel built mainly for jigging/bottom fishing

I'm going to be doing a little of both so I might as well go with 2 TLD 50 2 Speeds and 2 Torium 2 Speeds

If you want a little mix of both, the Tyrnos is around the price of the tld and is available in a single speed/two speed(2speed more expensive) with a 5:0-1 ratio i believe and would be a much better trolling reel. the torium 50 really doesn't have the size, line capacity of a 50tld. like said earlier, it is intended as a high speed retrieve and used with braid. another option would be to get a couple penn senator 6/0. If you got two tld 50's. two 6/0 senators and two torium 30/50's(saltist is a better reel imo) you will still be around the same cost. match the torium/saltist with a ugly stick big water or custom 6'6" heavy 20-50# rod and you have a rod that can handle grouper golden tiles. we still use 6/0 mixed in with our shimano tiagra, and tld 25's, tld 50's. not the prettiest reels, but much better for trolling than the torium. you will wish you didn't have that high spped retrieve if you hang a tuna of any size. look at these tyrnos 20's w/ 5.0:1 for $165 each still can buy the tld 50's and can troll or bottom fish better than if using the toriums for the same price. probably have the same line capacity of the 50 torium, but have harness lugs for tuna marlin fishing.
