I am looking to invest in a GPS handheld for when I am running around outdoors. I do a lot of the same fishing folks do here-without a boat. Running around the woods looking for smallies. I also take at least a couple trips a year to florida or the carribean. Any suggestions for decent, not terribly expensive handheld units??

I got the Garmin Colorado 400C unit for maybe half what it was a year or so ago, think it's less then $300 now since the touch screen came out. Anyway been way back in the Everglades and its the bomb, easy to use, nice screen. Many say its better then the touch screen. Either way I doubt that a walkin talkin GPS can be much better.

I've got a Garmin GPS Map76CSX. I love it, its been all accross the country with me. it comes preloaded with buoy and water feature data. it is also water resistant, and they say it floats... never tried it though.

I have those same paddle shoes. I used them for 6 weeks of sailing and kayaking in baja and they were awesome.

Might want to look into the Lawrance XOG that can be used in the car with preloaded road info like the Tom Tom but also has the ability to collect points "off road" and can be preloaded with marine charts to be used as a chart plotter. They cost around $150-200. The one down fall is that the battery power only last about an hour. You can buy extra battery packs or have an external power source.
I've had a few of the hand helds over the years but the Sport Track is my favorite. It's swimming in the Potomac Right now but it did float and I even tried it once.

bought the oregon 400c and then downloaded the city navigator and topography. best thing i purchased this year! i used it last week to fing a creek going to our ducblind at 5am and it was spot on. I love the way you can set up different activities so it only displays what you want in that mode. No need for togo or roads on the water so it loads and runs faster when you run some items disabled. ready to do home - just flip over to car mode and you have driving navigation. excellent unit! bought online for a good price.
