HIT N RUN
11-27-2009, 11:19 AM
Crew: Bert,Joey,Barry,Shane & me.
Lots of morning fog (pea soup) made for a long ride down the sound but cleared up quite a bit around Wanchese. Then it was the 7:00 am hold up at the inlet in fine form. Doable but had to count sets & get it right. Lots of boats piled up going one at a time at just the right moment. Made it through just right & then a comfortable steam at 75 degrees to the 930 line rigs in at 9:30am. Flat lines going back wards right out of the gate with 2 staying tight.
Sweet we thought:thumbup:, starting just inside the fleet in about 80 fathoms. We soon heard the lack of bites on the radio for them so Just then the call came from below & soon they all picked up to run south to that same pretty water that had moved out but had been holding for the past few weeks. Seem's it had pused back in some & was producing well again.
Since we had just got lines in & also had hooked up we chose to stay & instead work north steady listening to the bites up there from the Vb boats on 79. Water looked a bit cloudy to me but the temps seemed to be the same for us as what the VB boats having luck in were, 72-73 degrees so we just kept on zig zagging up the line looking for birds & Bonita signs but never found the marks. The bite the day before we heard was between the 950-980 so the hope was to find them soon enough.
Well by now it was getting to be 11:30 or so & with all the good fishing on the radio both above & below us with us still in the middle seriously "SUCKING HIND TIT", I had to make a move & so with the thought of a closer run home from the southern bite, I pointed her south to the 850 (300) fathoms where we set lines back in with the remainder of the fleet who hadn't quite finished their limits yet ;-) in a cleaner 73.4-8 Tuna looking water but once again hooked right up but this time it was a screamer staying way down. Shane was a real brute, man-handling this beast of a fight for the next hour & a half finally ending in huge disappointment even though we all new that the fight didn't feel right but after all the time & effort was at least hoping for a beast of a shark or of course
something better still. Well the beast finally came to view with leader in hand & it was one of those (big as your entire cockpit) Manta rays.:helpsmilie:.
Cut the leader then trolled our way back in from (at this point), 600 fathoms back in to the 100 with lines out at about 2:45pm without so much a a single sniff. Just one of those trips when you just can't get it going.
A surprisingly nice ride in considering the rain & wind that moved in to pick up the seas directly at our homeward heading. Just enough following sea to keep the nose down scooting us right along making the bar at 4:30 with the inlet much improved since the morning. All in all a great day boating wise other than the morning hold ups from fog & inlet but surprisingly poor fishing results compared to most others lucky enough to be out there on such a nice fishing/weather day.
OH WELL, as my Dad used to always say to us kids while asking for something he didn't want to either Do right then, or Buy us kids at the store. "Maybe Next Time"
Ended the day with only 2 out of 3 Yellowfin & a huge winged critter.
Happy Thanksgiving
Bill.
