I have killed plenty of deer with my 870, its about 14 years old. It has been totally bulletproof. I use it hunt dove, duck, turkey, and deer. With that being said I would not buy a new one now. I have just heard to many horror stories about them. If I were going to buy a slug gun I would buy one of the single shot ones. Even though it sounds good to switch barrels all the time, its not really practical. In my opinion buy one or the other now, then when you are ready buy the other one. Again just my opinion.

If you are just using it for shot/buckshot shells just buy an 11/87 and use the factory barrel. You can use a aftermarket choke tube to help tighten up the buckshot pattern. I have a Wadwizard Supreme and it is nasty with buckshot patterns out to 60 yards.

I'd had a 11-87 for many years. It was a very good gun. Never jammed once. It just seemed like my 870 held the buckshot tighter, so I let the auto go.

I'm not a shotgun deer hunter, I'm totally a rifle guy, but I did buy a single shot with a rifled slug barrel just incase I have the opportunity someday to hunt local. I can tell you I was very impressed with how tight of a group this gun shoots. It will cut the same hole at 100 yards. I'm using the hornady SST slug, which is a saboted 45 cal bullet. super fast compared to other slugs and will reach out easily to 200 yards.
if you're in the tight brush it will also shot a tight group using the rem copper solids.
Just my 2 cents. hope it helps!! good luck!!!

I hunt with a Rem. 1100. I have had for close to 40 years. Most of the guys in my hunt club use 11-87's without problems. I agree with the post stating buy the gun with a smooth bore barrel, and take it out and pattern it. You can buy a Rem. cantilever scope mount riffled slug barrel(or Hasting) and switch them as needed. I have done this for years. Changing barrels is a snap ( less than a minute), with the scope mounted to the barrell accuracy is maintained. I shoot very tight groups with mine at a 100yds with Winchester 2 3/4 platnum tip slugs. You will have to try and see what your gun will shoot best. Don't forget, PATTERN YOUR SHOTGUN! That way you will know exactly what YOUR gun shoots best.Good luck!

I have an old 870 and a new one and I have to say that the new gun is not the same quality as the old one, but I can't fault you for choosing a Remington. If you intend to shoot slugs go with a hastings cantilever barrel. My old gun has a hastings and the new gun has a remington barrel and the shot groupings is much tighter with the hastings barrel

I have an 1187 that is 20 years old. 28" ventelated rib barrel with bead sights. I put the improved cylinder choke in and shoot 3" sluggers in a 4" group at 50 yards. Put teh modified choke in and have a ball with tree rats, dove, ducks and geese. Never tried buckshot thru it.

I love this gun, and you won't go wrong with an 1187. BUT.... They've gotten pretty darn expensive.

I also have an 870 that will do the same tricks for half the price and will double as a boat paddle in a pinch and still go bang when you pull the trigger.

Any recommendations for a choke tube for the 11-87 and buckshot.

Turkey full and 00's was very bad.

IC and 00's was good. With 3" #1's very poor.

That is all the tubes I have so I'm looking to buy one that is a proven winner with 3" 00 or 3" #1.

I see the Wadcutter with a good review above and just wondering what the masses may recommend.

Thanks
Glenn

You've just got to keep trying different combinations with your gun. Take good notes. My 3.5" 870 got a full choke screwed into the barrel before the first shot. It puts 8 to 10 (out of 18) 00 bucks into a 30 inch circle at 60 yards consistently. That’s good enough for me. I loved my 11-87, but could never expect a group like that from it. Not even close. And I tried every possible combination of choke, ammo size, and ammo manufacturer. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I have an 11-87 from 2007. Its a good solid all around gun but it has a few things I do not like. One is it is on the heavier side, and the other is it has an additional piston for shooting 2 3/4 inch shells. This is a P.I.T.A. in my opinion and the gun still jams sometimes. Its good if you just use it in the marsh for duck/ goose loads. I could get the same utility out of an 870 for less cost. If I had the choice of the two I would go 870. However, I dont shoot any of the aforementioned loads. Just my 2 cents.

That is nice but he was asking about the 11-87. Who has ever heard a horror story about an 870? Like you said..... they are bulletproof.

Yes I love my 870, I would not buy a new one now. I have heard horror story after horror story about the new 870's. I am pretty sure if you look on Duck Hunting Chat (http://www.duckhuntingchat.com) you will find what I am talking about. Its been a while since I saw it. A friend bought a Benelli Super Nova and loves it. We found all the info out about the new 870's when he was shopping for his Nova. Also a big fan of the BPS.

I have a 1187 supermag that is about 5 years old. I played with different factory chokes and all kinds of buckshot and could still not gety a decent pattern. My buddy handed me a tube and said here try this. I took a 50 yard shot at a target and put 18 pellets in a 14" circle, stepped back to 75 yards and fired again this time putting 14 pellets into a 20" circle (which is the size of the vital area on an average deer).. needless to say I went to Greentop that afternoon and bought one for myself - it is a buckkicker extra full, I usually shoot remington 3.5 OO or winchester 3.5 OO both of these loads are the unplated loads, they group better and seem to kill better than the more expensive plated loads out there.

I have not complaints, I had a herd of deer come off the hill into the swamp where I was sitting and I was tagged out with two shots fired at about 60 yards, neither deer moved when shot, they feill in their tracks. So I will stck with this combo!! Bad thing was getting them both out of the swamp and back to the logging road, it ended up taking 3 hours of dragging to do it lol

Remington 11-87 Super Mag 3 1/2 inch all the way!!! Cant go wrong. I use mine for deer, ducks, turkey, doves, squirrel, old lady, etc. This gun does it all. I have owned alot of guns, even the orginal 11-87 3inch when they came out in 1987. It does have alot to do with the choke tubes. I shoot a buck kicker like the above post for deer hunting. Simply SICK pattern. I have killed deer up to 100yards with buckshot. I bought mine the first year they came out and not had one problem. It has never even jammed once and I beat it to hell while running dogs and duck hunting especially. I would buy another in a heart beat. The best IMHO. Ben

I have heard a lot about those Buck-Kicker chokes but I have never had the results that some people claim to get. My 870 shoots way better patterns with a standard full choke and so does my Benelli.

I bought the Buck_kicker for the 870 and borrowed one to try in the Benelli. What I noticed was that when I patterned them the holes in the paper were not round? They were very jagged and it threw a lot of flyers. It seemed that the choke deformed the pellets and made them inconsistant. I keep hearing stories about these fantastic patterns @ 75 yds with Buck-Kickers but everyone I know who used one now has it collecting dust somewhere.

my buddy has a older 11-87 with a 30" 3" magnum barrell and the buck kicker choke tube and last saturday we shot it at a small 10"paper plate and he shoots the federal 3" 000bk premium buckshot and at 50yds he put 8 out of 9 pellets in that plate and did it 2 times, thats a good setup, but i have a older 1100 that has the 28" 2 3/4 fully choked barrell and its a modified barrell and at the same spot i shot my gun using winchester 2 3/4 00bk with 9 pellets and i put 7 out of 9 in the plate and then i used remington 00bk with 12pellets and shot and put 9 out of 12 in the plate. and i shoot slugs out of my gun also, i use the brenneke slugs(think thats how you spell it) and up to 60yds its dead on, and thats with the standard barrell, but the slugs are for smooth bore barrells.

wow.....100 yards is a long shot with buckshot.
