First off thanks to everyone who posts reports on here. The information that I've gathered here has helped a great deal. My question is about planer boards. Are they designed to put out more lines or are they used to get the bait away from the noise and commotion of the prop? i've never used them. To get more lines in the water i use the "y" shaped rodholders. Again, thanks for everyones help. I've had decent luck around 13 on the Rapp all season so far.

They do both. However, they also take a while to set out and get your spread on them. You pretty much are committed to the area you set them out in. It's not like you can reel up real quick and run to another area. They are more effective in the Spring when the fish are more spread out. When the fish school up in the Fall, you really don't need them.

Yes, they do both. I've only taken three trips this fall, and have caught 21 fish. Two came off the WWB, a handful came off the 6 other boat roads, and the rest came off the board rods. I usually have a similar ratio in the spring, where somewhere between 50-60% of the fish come off the boards.

Planer boards are great for running a lot of lines higher in the water column. Not very maneuvererable though. I think those. who. Try to run them in the fall crowds are Just asking for trouble.

I find the boards to be a near necessity in the spring. Fish are usually high in the column. Keeping lures away from the boat pays off. Early in the fall I did well with them but effectiveness fell off as season progressed and fish went deeper. I should have had more real heavy stuff on the boat rod holders.

Thank you guys for all the answers. I will pick some up this winter and try them this spring.
