My buddy has an 870 sportsman with the fully rifled cantilever barrel in 12ga. He is having trouble getting any sabots to group good even to 50 yards. We reduced the trigger pull a little by swapping out the spring, and we have confirmed the scope is mounted tight and appears to be functioning properly. He has tried Hornadys, Federal Premium, and a few others. I reccomended a slower sabot like maybee Winchester Super-x, or Lightfields. Any of you have this same gun with any reccomendations? Thanks.

I have the same set up. Try the Remington Copper Solids. They seem to pair well with the 870.

I shoot Hornady SST Sabot Slugs out of the same set up and it is a tack driver at 50 yards

I've been shooting the 2 3/4" Lightfields for two years now after reading a review in one of the sporting mags on slugs. I've been crushing deer with them in the same set-up. Took one in the neck at 70 yards. Last year I also had a couple 100 yards away, I held just over the back to "drop it in" like I did growing up in Michigan with no scope or rifled barrel. Well, I killed a 2" diameter tree just over the back of the deer and scared the crap out of the deer. It's a deadly combo.

Sounds like it may be a scope probelm. Can you site under the scope to shoot 3 or 4 shots to see if they group. They that would confirm that there is a problem with the scope.

I shoot Hastings - Laser Accurate 2 3/4 inch slugs out of my Hastings 870 rifled barrel.
Tight groups (5 shots) at 100yds
Shots limited to 125 yard. The slug drops like a rock between 125 and 150 yards.
Hits 'em HARD and knocks 'em down. Never had a problem finding a deer. Never missed a shot with them.
I bought 4 boxes of Remington Copper Solids, but haven't tried them out yet. I think the Copper Solids have a 175 yard range???
I haven't used my 870 slug gun in the field in 2 years...I now use my muzzleloader instead because I can shoot 200+ yards and it has a better scope on it.

I shoot a Browning A bolt and use Lightfields. Before I bought that gun, I had an 870 with a Remmington fully rifled barrel and shot Winchester Supremes with very good accuracy.....Gary

Would not be too unusual to anticipate the recoil of an 870 with slugs and flinch or jerk the trigger.
Try a shot bag partially filled with sand on your shoulder to soak up the recoil and see if the groups improve.
Also try the lightest slowest slugs you can find, I have an 870 slug gun and it is not pleasant to shoot too much !

In my 870 set up the same way, this last time I finally settled on 1oz. remington copper solids - expensive, but grouped very well. Federal and Brenneke of various weights did ok to poor. I'll be shooting again next week for the fun of it when I shoot my muzzleloader, I'll see if I can remember to report what it does.

Just about any sabot slug should give you a reasonable pattern at 50 yrds. Try shooting several rounds (of a single brand)@ 25 yrds without adjusting the scope and see if it is consistant. I had the same problem with a Bushnell shotgun scope. The accuracy started off as a slight error and slowly grew to a real problem. Put a new scope on the gun and it will shoot a very tight pattern at 100 yrds. A 12 guage slug is a punishing round, I would be willing to bet your scope is the problem. That is if you are shooting from a bench, with a vice or bag, and flinching isn't taking place. It's hard not to flinch after you shoot it several times! GOOD LUCK!

Actually I find it easier to shoot because after a couple boxes of 3inch magnums I've pretty much lost feeling in my shoulder and arm ;-) :D

I too shoot the 2 3/4 lightfields and LOVE them. They are good out to 125yrds and will group within 3"
