Anyone know a local source for buying one of these ? I've looked in a few places without any luck. It's one of those should-have items for Yakking, especially if you're hunting larger gamefish.
K-mart has them in the fishing section and Bass Pro Shop has them. Ask for a release knife and the sales associate should point you in the right direction.

We get the point Chad....
I saw them in BPS for $20 the other day. They are directly across from the electronics counter. I was going to pick one up, but I didn't have enough allowance to cover it. I need to start packing my lunch again....
Something happened and caused my computer to post the reply three times and when I tried to use the edit function and fix it it goes to "cannot display page". But thanks Goby, I am glad you got it.
Anyway, here is some useful information. The website for the guy that makes them is http://www.releaseknife.com/. I contacted him to see if we can get a deal if we buy them in bulk for the club and I am wiating for his response. Then maybe Goby's allowance would be enough to cover it.

Chad and Goby thanks for the responce. I think the idea of buying them in bulk for Club distribution is a great idea Chad, keep working on that angle you'll make a lot of friends.

You could use a knife with a gut hook also. 2 in 1 kind of knife.

I thought about that as i was looking at my alpha buck knife, with the gut hook. Then i invisioned getting a rope tangled, etc and having to use it in an emergency (wich i think is the reason for this post, an EMERGENCY knife..) and i came to this conclusion, if you try and cut a rope from around your neck with a gut hook, the other side of the blade, in my case a razor sharp deer knife, would become very, VERY close to sawing my head off... now i have a steady hand, and prolly wouldnt saw COMPLETELY through my head, but with crashing waves and adrenaline, i might give myself way too close of a shave!
P.S. Also I paid WAY to much for that knife to bring it out on the yak...[grin]

Linstad -
All good points! BTW did you guys catch the Tred Barta on friday evening where he was talking about just that - carrying a knife to cut yourself free. He had real good points and I know have a knife attached to my pfd and belt.

There is only one problem with that knife:
Say you are stuck between a couple rocks by the foot or hand. With a regular sharp knife you could cut off the entangled limb to free yourself! With the hook knife you are pretty much screwed. Just make sure it is sharp or you could end up like the climber in Colorado. He had to break the bone and then cut through the flesh and nerve with a dull pocket knife. Ouch.

Buy a hook knife. I always carry one with me. It can cut through fishing line, paddle leashes, stringers, or webbing. I used to carry a 6" filet knife in a plastic sheath until I got slammed during a surf recovery at Sandbridge beach. The sheath broke and the tip of the knife ( about 3/4 inch or so ) stuck in my inside left thigh a few inches from my femoral artery! No more pointy knives in my yak. If I use cut bait, it's cut up and bagged before I launch.

I bought a stainless scissor at Big Lots for $1.50 that works great for cutting bait , beats the knife by far.
To clarify, I have the release knife on the vest for two reasons-cutting leaders for fish I wish to release quickly and just in case I need to cut free. Additionally, I have a SOG assisted open knife that is in the pocket of my vest and can be opened with one hand. It will not inadvertantly poke through the sheat because it folds. For me it is not an either or proposition, I always carry both.

The hook knife looks like a great idea and I may get one too.
Those stainless cooking scissors are great for cutting bait. I had a good $20 pair and it would cut the head off a 12" croaker in a heartbeat and cut line well too. I abused it for over a year and it finally broke so now I have the Dollar Tree special until I can get over to Target to get a new one. Word of caution: you can also cut off part of your finger if you aren't careful.
