Information on 85--90 Maryland Hatchery Program & My Dream
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Restoration
In 1985, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in cooperation with the National Marine Fisheries Service, state agencies, and universities, developed scientific studies of Striped bass as directed by Section 7 of the Anadromous Fish Conservation Act. A coast-wide striped bass tagging program was designed to estimate rates of exploitation, mortality rate, migration, and contribution of hatchery-reared fish to wild stocks.
Maryland and Delaware closed their striped bass fisheries for a period of 5 years from 1985 to 1990. In addition, Virginia imposed a one year moratorium in 1989. Following these closures, the fishery remains highly regulated.
Between 1985 and 1993, more than 9 million tagged hatchery-reared striped bass fingerlings were released into the Chesapeake Bay system. Hatchery-reared striped bass were marked with an internal binary coded wire tag, which is a tiny micro-encoded piece of wire not visible to commercial and recreational fishermen, but detectable by researchers using specialized equipment.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages a central database which stores coast-wide tagging information. State and federal partners have tagged almost 500,000 striped bass using external anchor tags (spaghetti tags) since 1985. Over 85,000 tagged fish have been caught and reported. The information gathered in this database has been instrumental in the restoration of striped bass

--I was asked yesterday on my "Picture/Charterboat Boycott" post about the Tags we ( Maryland) inserted into our Maryland released 9 MILLION , Yes --9 MILLION Hatchery fingerlings , these fish were Released in diffrent locations in the bay , many were in river Systems that are not Known to be VIBLE Natural Spawning areas --E.G.( My Favorite)the streams & rivers that empty in the West River #1 Area-
--These fish when Maryland DNR was *Montering Success rate of the Gill Wire Tag Program *along with the Fish counting Program ( Another Sore spot in my Craw , but Later to be dissuced )--Deale Boats Alone were catching several gill tagged fish on Every trip , proving that our Program was WORKING !!!--You Must use a Metel hand wand that BEEPS when Wire tag is present -- Bio. & Counters would Clip Gill plates involved & save in Alcohol, Jars for future Readings as to info ,Date, location of release ETC.---
---NOW that was Years Ago --Based on my Personal Opinion --Say fingerling was released in 1987 & Recovered this spring ( Or Raped in Va. this winter)2010 that fish would be 23 yrs old --(a 44" fish is 16 yrs old )--I think Maryland/Delaware/Potomac River Fisheries the 5 Year ( NO C&R-NO C&K-NO HARRASMENT ) user groups need something to Celebrate before being put to rest on our favorite Oyster Bar --I'm asking for help from Dnr, Candies, Dollars, Woods , Delagates, Senators, ASMFC State Governors, the IFGA , & Ole Rusty Crusties that were so the much a part of our Sacrifice in creating a "World Class Striper Fishery"---That was "Born" by All User Groups working Shoulder to Shoulder ---UNIFIED
--My Dream--For a World Record, State Record , ***IGFA ( any Class) World Record Striped Bass*** as a Record Requirement be Gill Wanded for a Possible Md. hatchery Tag Wire Tag --( 9 Million , 9 million )we released--think of the info. we would get --
---I Have A Dream-Respectfully Submitted ,Capt. George A. Prenant Deale, Md.
