I would stay with Motorola talk abouts. They range up to 26 miles for about $79.00. They will not go that far unless there is no obstructions like on the water.

$79 will get you 26 miles???? Is that correct? Thats a hell of a deal. We use Motorola rdu208d's at work, whole different class of radio, but they are bullet proof. We mainly use them for surveying and building layout.

The RDU2080's are the top of class for jobsite radios, and cost about $229.00 ea and is a top notch radio, even the step down RDU2020 is very good and will run you about $200 ea. As far as 26 miles from a talk about, maybe in a flat desert.:D The Motorola people will tell you what ever the specs are, realistically it is about 1/3.

I like the Midlands, 90 bucks for 2. They are re-chargable and come with headsets.

We have tried several types and haven't been happy with any of them. We have the radios that are advertised to talk 20+ miles and they will work up to about 1/2 mile. If I had to do it again, I would buy two marine VHF radios. I had one of those on my boat as a back up and they work great. I know a few people that use them for hunting and can actually talk to one another.

i have a set of the midland's and they are good but defenitly not getting out over a 1/2 mile. now i would defenitly 2nd what greg said about the VHF, i have a uniden and love it, thats all i use when i go hunting and most of the clubs i have been hunting with this year use them as well. you can find a good hand held from $60-$100 each

Like I said in my post earlier, the 26 mile radios will only go that far unobstructed like on water. They are plenty for the range for hunting and not a major loss if you lose them............Gary

All of that 20+ mile rated stuff is bullshit. The radios in that class might get you 1 to 2 miles in your typical use (hunting?) enviroment. Been using them for years. The real mccoys are about 500 bucks a piece.

Garmin RHINO. let a buddy use one and besides talking you both know just where the other one is located. My son and I use them.

The VHF are the way to go but I am not sure its legal to use them for this (everyone does) we hunt in the mountains twice a year and the camp has a regular radio rigged up and you can talk to people two or three miles away in the mountains thats pretty good. The legality part has something to do with licence for the airways.
