Anyone know how far up these rivers the tide penetrates?
I was on the Pamunkey yesterday, taking out at the Rt 360 bridge just east of Richmond, and it sure looked like the water level through there had dropped several feet that day. Is it tidal that far upstream?
Anyone know if the tide goes above the 258 bridge on the Nottoway?
Thanks

Know for sure it does on the Mattaponi so it probably does on the Pamunkey too. Don't know about the Nottaway

The way I understand, the Nottoway is not a tidal river. Water levels fluctuate naturally according to seasons according to the rains and snow received, then the dry season. Then the rise and fall that occurs at other times are due to the winds. The southern winds blows water into the Chowan and on up the river into the Blackwater and Nottoway rivers and the north winds blow it out .
Have no knowledge of the Pamunkey, never fished it. Surely someone will respond.
I live 7/10ths of a mile from Williams Landing on the Pamunkey and it's tidal here, not far how up it go's though. I've been wanting to do a float trip from RT360 down to the ramp in the kayak but havent been able to get anyone to join me. I think it would be about 10-12 miles.
The Mattaponi is tidal above 360 up into Zoar State Forest and is a nice float down to 360 with excellent fishing, that floatis 5 miles and it ussualy takes me 5-6 hours with stops for snacks and bank fishing.
Hope this helps.

I was on the float with Pete. The bite turned off abruptly once we noticed that there was a water line (sign of a drop in water level) on the bank. I'm just starting to learn what tidal influence means as far as fishing activity. Pete, was there a slug on the gauge? That would rule out or confirm tidal influence in my eyes. Thanks for turning me on to this site.

There is no "tide" on the blackwater or nottoway rivers in VA.

I think Uturn is right on
VDGIF says the Nottoway river has wind-driven tides, but not true lunar tides.

If you want to see "wind tides", Back Bay and the Northwest River are perfect examples. From what I have seen on the Nottoway and Blackwater Rivers there is no wind tide, the water is always flowing downstream. It comes up with the rain, not the wind. But I've only been working and fishing those rivers for two years now. So maybe I haven't been there when the wind was having a "tidal" affect.

Last Sunday, NewYaker (Ralph) and I went to the Nottoway. Put in at Courtland. Went up river. Between the two of us, caught well over 150 combined species of panfish and a few bass (biggest about 1.5#). Fly rod and mostly poppers, but caught a few on plastic bead head nymph/streamer. Want more places? Drop me Bmail.
