Small Deer

The two areas I hunt in Va this year I have seen more small deer this year. Has anyone else experience this? I do not know if they were late being born this year or it was just a great year for the fawns. The place I hunt the land owner wants some deer killed but I just hate killing small deer. I had to kill one Christmas eve because it was crippled and I wanted to keep it from suffering. I thought it was just a small doe but after killing it I found out it was a button which up set me--next years buck gone.

I think Va is moving towards a later rut. See alot more small deer than years ago.

We (including Guzzi) don't call 'em small. We call 'em tender.

Too Many Does mean lots of does don't get bred in the first rut so the does come back in heat a second time. Now!! get bred and have late fawns. Need to shoot more does!

I saw nothing but small deer this year both in the Montgomery Co. Park hunts and my private property hunts. I shot 16 of them and also call them tender ones. If I could only shoot 2 deer, I would wait for big ones but it might have been a long wait. Never saw one. Little ones are tender and easy to drag and skin...................Gary

We have our share of peanuts too , Yesterday One of club members killed one I thought was a mutant mouse, I swear I had to ask him if he caught it in a mouse trap.

I have seen above average buttons this year.I was woundering why myself.But the late rut with too many doe sounds right.

We have seen a lot more small deer and buttons this year - about 800 acres on the Rapp river - we did not shoot as many does as usual last year and think this is why. We are hammering the does this year but we had a guy mistake some small ones for bobcats off the stand - they were that small. Still focussed on does and not seeing any bucks right now other than small ones due to pressure.
