With all of the rain this weekend, we didn't have many choices of places to fish. Fortunately, the LeTort is almost always fishable. My friend Jim and I checked out a few spots along the lower stretches before deciding to try the headwaters. Lots of midges and a few BWOs early. We eventually found a few rising fish. I moved into position while Jim watched. I realized about this time that I had left my camera in the car. Rather than walk back and get it, I started making casts with a 22 cdc BWO emerger. Caught and released a beautiful 12 inch wild brown after about 10 casts. There were still a few fish rising, so I let Jim take the hole while I ran back to get my camera. By the time I returned there were some large tan caddis hatching. Jim was working on two fish, but the rises were few and far between. We saw one fish slam a caddis, but most rises were to BWOs. There seemed to be two distinct sizes hatching. The smaller mayflies were approx size 22 and the larger bwos were approx 16-18. I've never seen this before on the LeTort. At first, I though they may have been a different kind of mayfly entirely. Still not sure. In any event, I spent the rest of the day scouting for Jim. I didn't make another cast the rest of the day. It's just fun sometimes watching the bugs tumble down the stream. We didn't see any other fish rise all day except for the two fish in the same 50-70 section of stream. Eventually the hatch ended and we called it a day. I had been skunked twice this fall on the LeTort, so it was nice to feel some weight on the end of the 3 weight. I took a few photos at the end of the day, but you'll just have to trust me on the trout! I did get a caddis to pose for a few photos, but the bwos wouldn't cooperate. ;)
