For those of you interested in catching one of these great sportfish, if not the greatest, Vic Gaspeny has written an article that's included in the new 2010 IGFA World Record Game Fish book that's just been mailed out . Vic's a great angler who helped discover this daytime fishing and he and Richard Stanczyk have really developed it into an art form. Vic has single handily landed 153 swords, and most of them daytime fishing.
If you're interested in daytime swordfishing, I'd recommend it to learn from, plus it's a great read.
Personally, I'd love to see other folks get involved up here, as the more who do it, the more we all can learn. We have the fish, just need some more hooks on the bottom to figure it out. And now's the time too, if we could just get this blasted wind to stop blowing.
Capt Earl Paul shared that when long-lining here, he'd fish from September through February and only quit then because the seas were too rough. We see the boats now, so we know they're not hanging around just because the love to fish, they are catching swords!
If you're not an IGFA member, I'm sure someone will share their book with you. Congrats to Vic on his success and his wilingness to share this information. As he puts it, "The geny is out of the bottle!"
Plus, Vic only hand cranks these fish. We both agree that's it's too special a fish to use an electric on. They are a tough fish to land, and feeling him along is a lot of fun.
