So.....are any of you small boat-guys watching the weather forecast or did you all winterized your boats? Thursday and/or Friday looks do-able and the SST's (the last ones that actually showed anything) are lookin' like the temp break is close to the Point.
My questions are:
--Is anybody else going?
--If I go out there toward the temp break and do my usual thing (troll, troll, troll) are the YFT's or BlackFT's gonna be there? I see the usual Photo-results on the OIFC website's fishing report but.......where are they catching those YFT's? Have they been trolling them up (on plastic squid or meat) or jigging.
--Is everybody just going down to HI to jig for blackFT's?
I would love to catch some offshore fish in the wintertime. That would be so freakin' cool. I've got the boat and gear ready. Crew is lined up.
kayak, I have a crew ready to go Friday, Looks like alot of people are headed to hatteras to jig for the blackfin. I am going to try the edge of the stream at the point . Hopefully there are still some yellowfin hanging around there. In past years i've gone out to the break in jan. and feb. and not seen a boat all day and caught limits of yellowfin. Only one way to find out if they are hanging around there now! We will be at the dock at OI around 5. Hope to see ya there! We will be in an old 23 Seacraft. Gotta love a cabin cruiser with full curtians this time of year! If ya want to give me a call my number is 675-7907 Chris.

thanks. I am psyched about going out of OI. HI is a possibility, but that extra long drive (from Va) is not too appealing to my crew (or me). I know none of you has a crystal ball, but if you do, what is more likely to yield fish: YFT's/blackFT's out of OI, or blackFT's out of HI?
Loop. How will you be fishing..baitwise? I've been learning for the past two years and it seems I caught more on skirted ballyhoo in the spring/summer and more on plastics in the fall. If I go, I'll be bringing both.

kayak, in my experience whenever we caught them in the winter their bellies were always full of small squid. Always had good luck with spreader bars and of course the good old green machine. Also had luck with squid chains infront of sea witches.

I am also not sure where to go. I have got friend going out of each marina. I would like to have more buddy boats so we can work together. I look at it like this I will just bring both bait bags and have real and plastic on board if I am going out of OI. If all fails I will fish the wrecks for tiles and grouper, they are there year round. I would however like to hear of good reports out of one of the marinas. Let me know where you end up going kayak.
