View Full Version : Dacron vs Monofilament for backing on Reels

Setting up a boat and rods for striper Got planer boards Was told to get Braid and back it with dacron Went to BPS and the guy there said dacron is weak use mono My rods have 40 lb mono or 30 lb mono on them now dont want to waste it all but if need be i would take it offf can you backup 65 lb braid wiyth the mono i have what do you all suggest thanks Ed

Use dacron for backing this stuff will last for ever and you will never have to replace it. Add about fourty or fifty yards of 80lb braid. for 65 lbs braid. Mono hs a tendency to stretch and can crack a spool.

Probably the same guy that tried to tell me that a pound of feathers weighed less than a pound of lead.

I have used mono as backing for years w/ no problems. First under wire and now under braid.

Either will work, Article this month in Marlin mag about backing, topshots, and connections. They said use dacron or old mono, cheaper use mono,
