From one greenhorn to another, look at this site. Yes, a lot of trout flies but if you go through it. It has Clousers, Decievers and a few others. I did watch about every video on there though. I think it helped me because you get to see different
stylies of tying from a bunch of people. It helped, but nothing like how Tiefest helped me get started. The site should hold you over for now. Im into my second year and do all kinds of stuff. Stopped doing saltwater for a few months and was just doing trout, but I am stocking up my saltwater boxes for this season. Its a lot eisier going from trout flies to saltwater. It was so fricken hard trying to go from a 3/0 hook down to a size 12-16's. Just started tying some nymphs on 20's but its getting easy.

Try some clousers to start as well as some deceivers and half and halfs. Chartreuse and white make good starting colors. Definitely check out Tie Fest if you can as you will learn a bunch from some great folks.

Top flies for me are:

Bucktail Deceiver
Siliclone
Clouser
Surf Candy

Don't worry too much about color. Get a few white bucktails and a chartreuse, and some polar flash and you're ready to roll. I gotta do some tying (instead of playing Call of Duty with the kiddos!)

O, my favorite color is white for some reason. I went through 6 or so white bucktails last year. I really liked the Jumbo white ones from Anglers but I think you can get them other places.
A big white deciever wtih some pearl flashabo and some gold or peakcock colored flash. If I didnt want a BTD and wanted the normal, I would put Grizzly hackle as a tail instead of white
to spice things up. Thats still my favorite pattern to tie.

Come to TIEFEST. You will see all you need to see and more.

I'll add a few more to PAXFISH's list.

Gurgler
Crease Flies

I love to tie... and I will tie all kinds of different patterns. But somehow I always go to simple flies I know will work. Good Luck... Introduce yourself to folks at TIEFEST if you go. 99% are just dying to help. Mike

Clouser Deep Minnow
Lefty's Deceiver
Popper

You can fish from top to bottom with these three patterns. Vary the length, color and materials used to get the result you want. A pattern Lefty showed me long ago that has become my go-to fly is what he calls a Cactus Striper. Sort of like a Crystal Bugger but with cactus chenille or estaz for the body and long saddle hackles (replacing the marabou) for the tail. I don't have a photo handy but I hope to tie some at TieFest.

the basics have always been clousers and deceivers. For the bay I like Enrico baitfish flies and striper candies too. I know a lot of people who like gurglers but I personally do not.

Backbone of the arsenal are the Clousers, Deceivers, and Half-and-Halves already mentioned. These are very versatile flies that can imitate a huge variety of baitfish. Size is important - you want to cover the range from small to big. You also want some fully dressed and some slim. Next addition would be some poppers. I don't think stripers are too choosy. Crease flies are good bets - cast well, nice action while being retrieved - and effective. Pay attention to local color variations: Chartreuse and green, with white are very important in the bay - blues and greys (also with white) become more important up in New England.
