I spent Labor Day weekend on the New River with some family and fished the better part of 3 days. I caught about 50 smallmouth bass up to 13". I had some bigger ones on but I think my 4lb test line wasn't up to it. They are some crafty little fish. They will break you off on a rock or throw the hook in a second. The last cast before I got in the truck to leave came up with one that was easily over 18". He jumped about 10' in front of me and threw the hook. Oh well, I'll get him next time. I enjoyed paddling around there and got out to wade alot too. Oh yeah, and one 17" walleye, and I caught 10 or so of the smallmouth on my flyrod. Good times were had, I had an audience of old guys on the river bank that would give me a WOO-HOO when I hooked up. My nephew liked my little 9' yak so much that his grandad bought it from me!

I know this is a little off from what we usually do but it's a good time if you ever get a chance to do one of these type trips.

Yeaah man great catch! Was wondering how you made out after readin your thread last week about going up there and the gas price with the blazer and all.
Looks like you all had good family and fishing time bet it was worth the high $ gas (Priceless hhuh?)
Yes the smallmouths are alot of fun.I used to go on the upper James and float in a Jon boat with my son when he was growing up.We used to have ball. He's to tied up now since he got married and a job and a Bass boat.Forgot about pop!
Glad you had a good time and caught lots of fish. And posting it.
