View Full Version : Bill that would pave the way towards more commercial harvest of blue catfish

In my opinion this bill is a commercial fishery making a run at the one 32" or larger blue catfish law. You catfish guys should do what you deem appropriate to address it.

The deal is that commercial fishermen are managed by VMRC but harvest limits above the saltwater/freshwater line are generally managed by DGIF. The 32" catfish limit has been an ongoing deal with the commercial fishermen.

A. The Commission shall adopt regulations establishing a special species catch license that shall be issued to persons to catch or take a specific species of fish when it finds that such species (i) are a threat to the viability of other tidal water fisheries or (ii) may have a significant ecological or economic impact. The regulations shall specify the following:

1. The type of gear that shall be used;

2. Length of season or time period for which license is valid;

3. Tidal waters where such fishing is authorized; and

4. Daily catch limit.

B. The holder of such a license is authorized to commercially sell his catch.

C. The costs of the license shall not exceed the costs of issuing the license.

The PRFC would like the big cats all gone on the Potomac.. They consider them a top preditor and I quote "We would not like Potomac to end up like the James"..

Something about biomass and how the James is 80% blue cats..

If these fish are such a threat why are they talkin about a daily bag limit and a possible season or is this something for the commercial fisherman only.Sounds like every big dog wanys a piece of the pie

Part of this is a push by commercial fishermen who are not happy about the 1 fish over 32" rule. It will first be heard at the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. Here is a list of members. Delegate Morgan is the chair. The bad part is that on the face if it the bill might not be all that bad . . . . except for the sell what you catch part.
