Fished Sushi II solo yesterday and today out of MHC.

Yesterday stopped about 3 miles south of the Knuckle Buoy on the 51 to 54 deg change with a few porpoises, birds, and nice bait marks. Setting out lines (bent butt 130's) and as soon as I bring up the drag on the long rigger blue/white Islander to stop the line it comes tight and snaps out of the rigger, and off to the races...First run is half a spool at 34 lb strike drag. Circle towards him a little to get line back and 20 minutes later I have the leader coming out of the water and it takes another run. 5 or 10 minutes later and maybe 70 feet from the boat the hook pulls. No more bites that day. Beautiful day on the water with the kind of sunrises and sets that remind you why you fish offshore...

Today the water shoved in more and the same spot was now a 57 to 61 deg break with similar bait marks. Set out lines and no love today. At 10 I head offshore to the AR300 and get a 20 lb bonita on the deep rod - it actually pulled a little drag (5 feet?) on the Tiagra 130 with 34 lb strike drag...Bad ass bonita. Never seen one that big. Stop at the AR300 and drop and catch a stud beeliner, aka Vermillion Snapper, for dinner. Run back in to the 57/61 break and within 10 minutes of setting lines back out a huge USCG Cutter comes cruising by and then turns right at me, calls me on the radio and tells me they are boarding me for a safety inspection...They launch the RIB, I bring my lines and planer in, and we spend 20 minutes or so inspecting me for EPIRB, flares, PFDs, permits, etc. It's now 230 and I'm over it so head back in. On the way in I spot a 31 Fountain not moving to my port and I head his way a little to see if he's hooked up. He starts waving at me from the front of his boat and I head to him - he's lost both engines and has no electrical power, not even radio. I call the USCG Cutter and ask them to come assist this guy and they do, asking me to stay with him until they get there. I do and I finally get to head in.

The bluefin aren't here in any numbers right now and weather 4cast sucks until next week. I'm headed home and will post when I'm headed back to MHC. Am leaving Sushi II here until the end of season and possibly longer to see how long the bluefin are out there for research purposes.

Nice report Sushi. At least you were out trying. VERY good deed you did with the Fountain boat.
You'll be rewarded for that.

Thursday looks like it will be the last day of the BFT season. Any takers on Sushi II out of MHC?
