What makes a crab net snood friendly?
How is it different from standard?
I am making a couple of new nets and figgured that would be the way to go.

Beachercreacher,
Welcome to the Crab Board!
Come to Snood Fest, I know you will leave with a full stomach And more knowledge than you had about crabbing.
I borrowed this post from my friend Jerry (Polecat) whom answered your question that has been asked before.

If the holes in the net are large enough, any bait can get stuck or slip thru the hole. To prevent this, I line the inside rear portion of my dip nets with hardware cloth (6" X 16") [aka rabbit wire]. This eliminates the possibility of baits or bags becoming snagged.

Eat CRABS...... the other white meat.

You've been a member since early 2008 and this is your first post. Welcome to the best Crabbing Board on planet Earth!

Don't be so bashful and come to Snood Fest to see first hand how to make a Snood/Bait proof net.

The computer I'm using doesn't have a photo of the modification to the net, so I can't post one right now.

I'll try to find one on my other computer (that isn't feeling so well) and transfer it to here.

Stay tuned. Don't touch that remote!!!!

Here's a version of one modification I made:

31152

It's much easier to place a piece of hardware cloth inside the net without disturbing the original wire. Make it go from the handle junction to half way around the net on both sides.

In other words.... If the handle junction is the 6 O'clock position, fasten the mesh from the 3 O'clock to the 9 O'clock opsitions. The mesh should be no deeper than 6" and about 16" long. Half inch mesh provides less drag than does 1/4" mesh and gets the job done..

Thanks for the welcome
I have kind of been a lurker here
I used the demo from a previous thread on how to make a net
I think that I just need to weave the holes smaller to accomplish this
When you use the hardware cloth, how wide is the strip that you use?
The first one was a little rough, but I am pretty sure that they will get better
If it looks good enough I might even figure out how to post a picture

The answer is above, but I'll repeat it.
6" X 16".

Most (not all) nets are woven with 16 strands of wire. As you get closer to the rim (top) the spacing always grows larger.
Without adding more strands there is no way to make the holes smaller. However, if you figure out a way to accomplish this, please share it with the rest of us.
