I know this is a kayak fishing board, but I'm interested in duck hunting from a kayak. I have a sand Tarpon 140 that I'm going to cover in blind material from Cabelas. I'm planning to hunt sea ducks around Gywnn's island or jump shoot further up the Piankatank. Does anyone know much about this area? Should I add an outrigger system to make the boat more stable? Any help is appreciated

I can't tell you anything about Sea Ducks from a Yak. But have seen a lot of them in open water on the bay. I think I would want a mother ship under any conditons.

But Jump shooting is something I do once a year.

I shoot the Blackwater. Go in at Zuni on Rt 460 and take out just above Franklin. It's a great float. Good wood duck populations too. No duck blinds on the shore to contend with. Only caution is to make sure there is enough water. I had one very long day many years ago when the water was down. Once you lauch there is no way out until you get to Franklin. A half day trip turned into a late night after pulling my canoe over hundreds of snags.

We generaly use a open canoe and only take one shotgun between two of us. I keep it in a waterproof case until ready to shoot. Trade off the paddle and gun. If you can stand and push pole it's a lot better. Most places are shallow enough and if standing you have a better view. The gunner should sit though.

I have a Yak and could use it but considering how often you get in and out think the open canoe is a lot better. With one gunner in the bow it's fairly safe too. He can keep the gun safe from dunking and accidental discharges while the stern man pulls the boat over beaver dams and logs.

I know it's not a good idea to go alone but am not so sure I want another boat along with a loaded gun to worry about. Pulling over logs etc makes a real good chance for accidents. Were are you going to put the shotgun when you get out to push if Yaking ?
