Hey all,

Been trailering my 20' boat out of Heathsville the last 5 years and I'm ready to slip it to make the time on the water more enjoyable. I've done a lot of homework on NN marinas over the past couple of months and have it narrowed down. The short list includes Windmill Point Marina, which is appealing from the perspective of location, amenities for the family (pools/beach/restaurant/etc.), proximity to the Bay and fishing spots, etc.

I know ownership has changed hands over the past couple of years and the economic conditions are making it tough for them, but my discussions with Dave this spring have been positive. I'd like to hear from anyone that's currently slipped there what they think? I haven't been there during the summer so I'm not sure if there are a good number of slips leased or if it's a ghost town. Positives, negatives, whatever you have to share I'd like to hear.

Thanks.

Windmill is a ghost town- There is no restaurant or even a place for you to stay unless you know any of the few homeowners that reside there year round. Windmill use to be the best place to go years and years ago, but the first owner who took over when it was sold ran out of money and stopped paying contractors- There is absolutely nothing there at the moment so do not be mislead by what you were told. They do not even have any fuel at the so called Marina. I would look elseware and do not waste your time at WP as you will be highly disapointed upon arrival- Anyone else ????????

p.s whomever the guy is that said there is a pool and restaurant or ammenities must have been smoking something funny:yes:

WP is finally getting its feet back under them. A Tiki bar opened in late summer, and has been decent, at least a start. The main pool looks complete (I last went and looked at it in November, and it was full of clean water), and they have been working on the little pool next to the condos on the far side of the marina.

The marina is by no means full, but is steadily growing. They do not have fuel now, but deltaville is a 10 minute ride (we usually fueled up there even when windmill had fuel)

I think they might have it under control. It will still take a while to get back to even where it was 5 years ago before it sold the first time, especially with people opinions (see above post).

Take what they have currently at face value, and any openings (especially timeframes) with a grain of salt. They have made tremendous improvement over the past two years, and im hoping it continues. You cant beat the location.

If you have any other specific questions, feel free to PM me.

Jay, thanks. That's what I'm looking for...comments from anyone that has some RECENT experience over there. It has changed a lot as of late. Anyone on the board that actually slips a boat there?...I know there were a few charters in there when I stopped in last summer.

The miss linda is there capt. Carlisle is a great guy and owns a condo at wp. He is listed in the ches. Angler. Ifyou charter him you will catch fish and learn more than you would expect.

There is an article about Windmill Point Marina in the Jan. 28th Rappahannock Record that you can read at www.rrecord.com.
There is no boat ramp there to launch your boat, even though a ramp that would be open to the public was proffered during a rezoning hearing on Feb. 23, 2006, which I attended and which minutes you can read at the Lancaster County website: http://lancova.com/BOSMinutes/docs/minutes022306.PDF.
If you contact them, please be sure to ask when the boat ramp will be completed.
I hope that they complete the boat ramp and install fuel very soon as I think both of these are necessary to bring customers to them.
Another option is Ingram Bay Marina, which has a ramp, fuel, a fish cleaning station, and picnic tables, but no pool. It would be about the same distance to restaurants and shopping in Kilmarnock as Windmill Point.

Chesapeake Boat Basin has a ramp, fuel, a fish cleaning station, picnic tables, a brand new pool and 32 new floating slips. It is less than 2 minutes from downtown Kilmarnock.

The Boat Basin is a great Place. Right in Downtown Kilmarnock. Almost as quick of run to the Bay. Clay has great service, store, weigh station and sells tackle.

When the marina changed hands they began dredging the entrance channel which had shoaled badly. They stopped I assume when the contractor was not paid. Ask Capt. Carlisle about depths especially at the outer end. Miss Linda should draw 3 feet so it should be good for outboard boats.

Thanks for the replies. Ingram Bay, the Boat Basin, and Smith Pt. Marina are the others on my short list. I appreciated the feedback.
