(Posted on Chessie board too...sorry if your seeing this twice)

I was wondering if anyone is using the plastic/resin style scotty (or other brand) holders ???

I am getting ready to rig the kayak with some rod holders tomorrow or Saturday...

Do the scotty's lock into place or can they slip out ???

In addition to a conventional holder I'm hoping to double dip and use a fly rod scotty on the boat and the kayak and canoe too...

[i][b]FOR THE KAYAKERS......Do the Scottys either the flush mount or the deck mount get the rod butts high enough off the yak deck ?? or do they need to be blocked up a little.

I had also thought about bending a 1/4" (or so) piece of aluminum for a backer....do you guys have any reccs on that or other methods ???

Thanks !!!

Spinning rods do ok, but for casting rods get the extension. THey will hold fluy rods, but with a fighting butt. They also make a flyrod holder.

Scottys are the best option for kayaks.

I use two Scotty deck mount holders on my kayak and like them very much. You have 360 degree rotation along with a retaining lock that prevents them from falling off. No blocking necessary. Changing them from different boats/kayaks with similar mounts easy. Get them, you'll be happy.

You really want to buy Scotty.

I have a Scotty on one side and I bought a Berkley on the other. Bad idea...a small mouth bass took off with it and the rod...thank goodness I made the leashes for my stuff. I replaced both to being Scotty and can alternate when I use the Fly Rod.

Berkley just doesn't have the grip/teeth that Scotty rod holders do.

You might want to look into leashes also, easy to make. All on Kayakfishingstuff.com

I am making the cart for hauling now as Cory has fixed the last hole/slice in my yak.

Good Luck to Ya',

You can buy the rod holders from Cabelas, their models are called 360HT. Also you can get the composite or stainless steel extension. I bought my stainless extensions over at BPS.

I used a small piece of starboard under my deck (put in a flush-mount holder) as a backing plate. Probably overkill, but.......

I am happy with my Berkley rod holder mounted thru the hull in my WS Palmlico 135T SIK. Thru the hull mounts it lower. It locks in place and is adjustable. I'll pull it if I have a ways to paddle, then put it in place when I am ready to fish.

also consider the RAM tube. i just installed one on the tackle box area of my P13... it's close enough to reach without any effort, and i can still troll off the side of my yak without it getting in the way of my knees or paddle stroke. i'm considering adding 2 more behind the seat where flushmounts would go.
