Okay, my first fish of 2006 isn't a monster blue cat like the one's at Dutch Gap but I did get to paddle and fish on New Year's Day. I paddled up the Warwick River and caught a few little catfish on frozen shrimp and made it home in time to watch the world famous Redskins make it to the playoffs (though it was an ugly first quarter). I usually do better than this catching catfish on the Warwick River. Is anybody catching fish?

A cat is a cat. I got skunked yesterday at Dutch Gap. 6 hours of paddling and fishing. Awful big water down there. I went down stream to the Gap and went south into the warm water discharge area and the wrecks. I thought I could see some fish on my Cuda 128 FF, but they didn't want my frozen shad.
Have you had any luck on the Blue whiskers down there?

I've been catching them across the river from you. I had been fishing just downriver of the mothball fleet in a little 20 ft hole inside the west side of the channel between two bars. Yesterday I fished inside the towers, and inside that dredged channel, between the fleet and the west shore(Hog Island Side). Most of my fish were 2-3 lbs but I've been getting a few from 8-12 lb.

I've been getting them on cut mullet from the hotditch, but lost a bunch of nibblers yesterday. My experience the past few winters is that the 2-6 lb fish hookup ratios are best on worms or grass shrimp when its really cold. Also, seem to catch more channel cats on the grass shrimp or crab.

Cut white perch is also pretty good on these smaller fish...I do better with all those baits than frozen shrimp.

I caught my 1st fish yesterday, a small chain pickeral at chick lake.[smile] I would'nt mind hitting the gap sometime with you guy's just let me know when. I've had pretty good luck down there with the stripers too, but I hate parking at the gap because of those damn vultures tearing up your vehicles.
I may put in at Henricus Park and use the dolly to get to the water though.
