Looking to pick up a spinning rod and reel for casting to Bonito, Mahi, chomper blues, maybe small yellowfin and such. Thinking I need something capable of a good bit line say 250 yds with a good drag. I was thinking a rod rated for 30lb or so heavy action and reel with similar drag capability and some good mono. This might be a couple times a year so I don't need the best quality but decent enough to hold up for a couple years. Am I on target?

Penn 750 SS Should do the trick..Go with a good St. Croix rod and you should be around $300.00 for the combo

Cabela's has Fin-Nor Ahab reels on clearance, regular price is $269.99, clearance price is $109.99. I just ordered 2 ABS 16s (250 yds/16lb) to replace 2 Captivas.

Get a penn torque in the 50 to 80 class range at 6ft and match it wiht a penn slammer. ive got two of these in my house and we use them for everything from tog to cobia striper drum flounder spades mahi spanish you name it these thigns can take a beating. we use em wiht planers for spanish jsut crank down the drag on the reel and let the braid humm. the rods themselves are very sensitive but have a lot and i mean a lot of backbone. the rod itself is $99 at most tackle shops and the reel shouldnt be more than $120 depending on size. Spool it up wiht about 20 yds of mono for backing and lay therest with 20-25lb braid and youll have one mean machine

Have you ever thougth about getting a Custom Rod built, I can build you a 7' Ex-Heavy 25-50lb line, E-Glass blank for right around $110.00. I know this rod would hold up to what you are after....Give me a call if this is something you would like...

I just put a Penn 750 SS on an 80-200lb Shimano Travala spinning rod. I jigged several Lesser Amberjacks out of Hatteras with it last month. It will handle mahi and small tuna for sure. I do not think it has the drag for a tuna over about 40 lbs. But I will have fun finding out it's limits.
Good luck.
