With all this snow how much crap is going to find its way into the Bay when it starts melting. road salts, chemicals used for ice and snow melt.

Normally in a heavy snow year the Miles River takes the brunt of what polutants and trash goes down the Bay - for some reason the Miles River acts like a magnet and then we have horrible crabbing in the MILES - right Davey?
I have also been told by very unreliable sources that the West River, the Pax, and any other river I (USED TO) frequent have no potential for crabbing after storms like this. I guess everyone should crab in OTHER rivers.

I couldn't help you with your wish but I just finish over 4 doz. good salty O's myself.
Also, Chuck beat me to the report on the Pax.
The river has just been placed on a "Do Not Crab Status for 2010". I believe the weather and man caused the problems. I'll miss her this season. One good thing about Maryland is there are other better areas around the Bay.
As I hear about one I'll give everyone here a heads up

All those chemicals, solvents, oils, dioxons, and other goodies washing down into the bay, the crabs will swell up to 3 times their normal size. Just think what those cancerous toumors dipped in butter sauce will taste like washed down with a cold one. UM-UM.

I don't think hard winters affect crabs much. There is only one way to find out and no amount of snow is going to keep me from crabbing this year

I think the season will start about two weeks later than it did last year. That is if we don't have a real cool Spring. I think the rock fish spawn will also start about two weeks late and many BIG females will get caught before they release their eggs as the catch and keep will start on April 17th. NOT GOOD........Gary

I forecast that we will have better crabbing this year than we have seen in well over a decade. I think we will see the first evidence of a strong population upswing as a direct result of the MD and VA conservation measures aimed at protecting females that were implemented starting in 2008.
Of course I could be wrong, the proof will be in the crabbing, but I am a proponent of science-based fisheries management and this is the first year we would expect to see the population rebound as a result of two seasons of reduced female harvests.

I agree with SteveL - the first bit of evidence i noticed many times last year was the large number of SMALL crabs all season the likes of which i haven't seen for MANY years - the restrictions on taking females has to have an impact and I'm hoping it begins to show up this coming season....but then again what do I know? Like the saying goes:
"AIN'T NOBODY KNOWS 'NUTHIN ABOUT CRABS" - that saying is one of my best selling signs I make! I even donated one to the good folks at the DNR who conduct the research our regulations are based upon - they thought it appropriate!

I agree guys. Many smalls at the end of the season and even though I caught nice crabs late, I didnt see those Dirty Black Dicks and Rusty Bottoms in the 8" and over range as in prior falls.
The early part of 2010 may be kick @ss! (JMHO)
God I love Maryland and the Bay!
CU at SF7. But there is a storm on the horizon! Trust me.
