Staked Gill Net Bill (HB1268)
Fish Killing Device and Boat Trap
Contact your state senator and delegate
HB1268 threatens to unleash another fish killing device on the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. In addition this bill would allow recreational staked gill nets to intrude into navigable waters, and threaten the safety of boaters.
At issue is a gill net device that waterfront property owners could attach to their piers and extend up to 300’ into waterways. Such gill nets would kill all fish that encounter the device, and pose a serious hazard to boaters attempting to navigate the adjacent waters. Under this bill, “recreational” netters can apply to the VMRC for permits to place these staked gill nets.
The ill-advised bill was introduced by Delegate Tom Gear (Hampton/Poquoson/York), and has already cleared the House Chesapeake Sub-committee. Time is short.
Please contact both of your state representatives, and ask them to oppose HB1268. E-mails are fine. You can also call and talk to a legislative assistant.
