Cabin fever had been setting in for weeks for many fishermen and I was one who needed to take a break and do some fishing.
Feb. 20th
Headed down to OBX Friday night stayed in Nags Head with Rich and Dan. Josh met us at the dock and we were out of Teaches and the inlet at sun up. Headed for the 280. Met some real nice waves about 15 miles for a morning treat. Our bait was still frozen when we slowed at the 290 in 70 fathoms. I worked the back and got a 5 rod spread out. I thought maybe I would run some sea witches I made but decided on the last minute to use my tournament spread from VBTT. Proved deadly but i lost a few of the lures before sunday. Anyway we were moving offshore into deep water and it was the right move. We hit 150 fathoms and were the first boat on the scene with a triple 10 minutes into the day. We put the steel into our first tuna and called the fleet in. We were hit again with another triple and landed one more. Lost two or three on the jigs we were unmatched. We decided to run into the 280 rocks for some jigging and found some marks there. I had the guys drop and to our surprise we were landing 100+ smaller class bluefins. We had enough and called the fleet in there and everyone got in on the action. We also caught some nice tiles and a mako shark. Don't think I ever had a day where I landed on the tunas first twice. Its never happened and I knew I was really lucky. What a day to remember.

Got some much needed sleep at the Comfort Inn 49 bucks if you have stayed there before. I met Bill, Dirk, Kevin, Beth, and Mike at the ramp. Thought it was going to be a mad house at the ramp but we made our way. Hit the 292 in 100 fathoms and was ready with the spread. Bill saw huge tunas airing out of the water about 500 yards from us it was crazy they were chasing baits all over. We ran over them and were hooked up to a triple. Dirk got a nice fish in and we hit steel on another great fish. We were hit again with our fourth triple of the trip and Kevin got to tangle with a bull who stayed straight down for about 45 minutes. Brutal. Bill did great work on the leader. Beth caught a nice Blackfin that made her tip. Countless amberjack. Thanks to everyone who came down.
Two days in a row and two monsters for me and my crew nasty fishing.
A few notes:
It seemed the bluefin's did not shy from the outboards like the yellowfin do. Many boatsl, some big some small had great bites and others didn't get a sniff.
Blue/White Pink/White flash is the best bait. Naked second.
We used 130 on most every bait you could have gone to 200 would have been better.
Shimano 50 Wide LRS are some bad reels.
7 for 25 bites including jigging

Mako
