Herb, i've been known to play "human line puller" on occasion. Not as fast as a motorized 1, but I work pretty good for cold beer and some crabs.

Saw this on another site;

Portable, Electric Trotline Winder works using your boat's 12 volt battery.

It pulls in your trotline with little to no effort. When you are done pulling in your trotline, remove the winder and stow it away or take it home with you. It is truly portable. No tools are needed to mount or dismount it from your boat.

There are two models available: "Weekender" - Pulls the trotline in at about 150 feet per minute ($600)
"Commercial" - Pulls the trotline in at about 300 feet per minute ($1200)

Call Ken at 410-708-1300 for more info or to arrange to come to Rock Hall, MD for a demo. If you live far away, I can possibly meet you half way.

I have the one above and LOVE it! (Weekender version) I will bring it to SF for those of you that are up in the air, or want some visual confirmation to pull the trigger. The only mod I had to make aside from shimming it down a little is that I remove the pin closest to the discs. It puts a lil more stress on the motor but I havn't had a problem with it. Knock on wood!

BowMovements,

Thank you for bringing it sunday I would love to see it. Been thinking of getting one. Capt Dale says it a must; however it might be cheaper to just take Fat Jimmy.

Do you use it to pull a straight line or a snood line?

Snood line. that is one of the reasons I shimmed it down a little more. If you don't, the shock cord (bungee) may slide past the knife once and a while causing a jam. It's no big deal but when it's 100*+ outside the less frustrations the better. ;-)

All the trot line puller does is pull the line in and you have to lay it in the basket evenly as it comes in................Gary

HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello Crabberrick,

The line puller is turned on and is powered by a motor that turns the two sheaths or discs counterclockwise. these discs are shimmed slightly with groves on the bottom of them, otherwise known as the bite. Think of it like two frying pans placed bottom to bottom with a bunch of little groves edged into them. Ok, now the motor is turned on and the lines is placed between the discs. The bite of the discs pull the line around them. Once the line reaches a certain point on the discs there is a knife that peels it out away from the discs and drops it in the downward direction where a basket is placed. The line falls into the basket or you can help it in and pat it down every couple of layers. and repeat. Help any?

Interesting thread. I was talking to Barney Kastel who makes a great winder but my concern is that it weighs about 70 lbs. which is a lot for my wooden skiff. He said that if you make them with a smaller motor, they really aren't worth fooling with. On smaller boats, people mount it opposite the steering position to counter-balance.

Not true. there are applications for every model. that's like saying there's no use fooling with Asian hookers. It just ain't true! LMAO as you all know I have the smaller model and it works like a dream. If you have a larger boat than you may need a larger model. BUT... I do not disconnect my acnhor line and the puller pulls my 22 skiff down the line against the wind and current and never misses a beat. Let me ask a question; Does Barney make the smaller models?

Matt - No smaller versions. The problem with Asian hookers is that you have a good time but two hours later you're horney.

OMG leave it to Jim LOL probably one of the few to have experience in this area on the board. kiddn... but really

Matt - Just a joke I heard once about a guy with a Chinese gilfriend that stuck with me. Hopefully no one finds that offensive because if so, I'll admit that I can't jump very high. I've spent way too much time working with sailors and Marines. - J

That would be Chinese food...........not women but then again it would be Asian.....not Chinese but then again, made in China..................Gary

The joke was... Hey Jim, I have this beautiful new Chinese girlfriend. Great Gary, have you guys been intimate? (cleaned up) Yes, but the only problem is that two hours after..., I'm horny again.

OK, now back to your regularly scheduled crabbing program.

I get it Jim BUT it is common knowledge that you are hungry 2 hours after eating Chinese food and it's true for some reason. Is that what you are talking about "being intimate":clap::clap: You have been out of control on the boards lately...............and I love it:thumbup:...........dirty old man.............Gary

Stingray...I am buying a trotline winder and extra spools from a guy in the Golden Beach area and he has three or four more to sell. If you are interested PM me back and I will give you contact info. I would post here but I have not cleared that with him. I'm sure he would be okay for me to post here but i will check and then if he is okay with it i will post here for other people interested. I will also post pics once I finish mounting it on my boat.

I got the okay to post his info if anyone is interested in one of these Trotline winders. This is a spool winder not a line puller. It won't work for snood lines, I don't think. The guy has really done a good job on these.

His name is Jim Harris at HarrisTaxidermy@comcast.net or 301-884-4150.

I think he only has two left...but not sure. They cost a little but look like they will do the job and last for a long time. I don't want to mis quote prices so you will have to contact him for those.

Good luck to everyone this year.

Are you going to do snoods or straight line?

Scott

I think snoods would get tangled with this type winder, but I run straight line mostly and if i do run snood I just pull it in by hand.

shiney! but that will change. It would be cool if you could lower it off the side of the boat and it could double as a roller.

crab_clam
04-07-2010, 06:48 AM
BowMovements - That would be very cool! I am thinking about lowering it 2-3 inches depending on how much it moves while underway and trailering. The bottom plate has a 7" pipe on it that it the same diameter as the pipe attached to the flat tray so I only have about 8" going down in from the top. Pretty much to the flat plate that ties into my gunnel. I am afraid to make that too short and not have enough strength.

I do like you idea....maybe Jim Harris can design that into his next generation. haha

PS. I can't wait to get the shine off it.

I like that alot, what kind of motor are you using?

crab_clam
04-07-2010, 02:19 PM
I bought it from Jim Harris (his info is a few posts back on this thread) and he had two motors to choose from.....I went with the 1/2 hp 1000 rpm that was two hundred cheaper then the 2/3 hp 500 rpm that my friend has used for the past four seasons and it is still going strong. I will see if this one can last and if I can keep with rpm boost. Only time will tell. Give Jim a call he has two of these left I think.
