now that the loran system has been shut down will everyone start using gps coor. for position reference on the water or continue to give lat/long lines as their point of reference? and why? thanks

Most newer electronics, take the lat long numbers and do a conversion to TD #'s like the loran. Most guys will continue to use the Td's as nothing will change.
The only change is that if you have a true loran C receiver it will no longer work. Not to many people were using the true loran receivers.

I believe folks will keep using Loran TD lines for many years to come. Easier to say I'm on the 150 line at 50 fathoms than trying to read off a lat/long. Plus if someone reads off a lat/long, I would have to stop, find a pen/paper, write it down, then plot it to find them. Saying I'm on the 150 line at 50 fathoms, I know exactly where you are....no writing anything down, no need to for plotting.

I run 2 gps's, 1 in lat/lon and the other in TD's. No reason the line #'s won't continue 2 b used.

GPS give you lat/long line not loran,

Yes, Capt. Nemo, but many of them can be set up to show TD's. If you fish offshore in NC, nobody except maybe the CG is interested in Lat./Long., everybody is set up to give position in Loran lines and fathoms, and I believe that you'd have to peel their cold, dead fingers off those Loran lines before they gave up the way they've always done it.

I am well aware of those facts, read the original post

No one now gives lat and long lines...they give loran TD's or Loran Lines... my only simple point

Isn't that assuming that the unit only works off of the GPS satellites and then converts to TD's? I guess I was under the assumption that when you set your unit to TD's, that it was looking for the Loran land based station and came back with the TD's? ??????????????

no it is only doing a software conversion to display TD's

Yes, and I understand that the conversion can make the GPS less accurate than a true Loran was in coming up with the TD's. That's fine for giving info over the radio where you are just giving the general area you are fishing in. In an emergency, especially at night or in poor visibility, the lat/long would presumably be better at telling rescuers where you are. We carry a handheld GPS, and can get Lat/Long from it quickly if necessary.

IF your Gps is set up for Td's ( or at least my C series raymarine ) when you look at the screen for vessel position it will give you your Gps lat and long numbers or if you hit MOB it will give you a lat long number.
That way in an emergency situation you wouldnt have to re set the settings on your Gps.

Nope, your GPS unit does not have a loran receiver, completely different antenna set-up, its a conversion
