This is probably the wrong forum, but its the one that gets the most viewing. The wife and I are looking to get a dog. We've always had golden's and had to put the last one down last year due to a nasty tumor. We've had dogs ever since I can remember and feel lost without one. Wifey started looking for a smaller dog, but I really like a big dog -- can't see myself walking a yorkie. Anyway, with the weather getting nicer, now is probably the time to start looking.

Checked the gr rescue -- I'm looking for a dog 1 year or younger. If anyone has a source (no puppy mills), please drop me an message. A golden retriever is my first choice -- but a yellow lab or similar breed dog is a strong possibility.

Thanks!!!

Dan

Have you checked your local shelter?
They usually have quite a range of age of nice dogs up for adoption.
The shelters (and the animals in them) need as much support as possible these days.

Beagles, get a beagle, got three in my house. Some of the best dogs you can have. Just like any breed the have their heritable problems. But they make great companions, most love the outdoors and make great boat dogs and as they are hounds can be trained as hunting dogs.

this is a great rescue agency. its a private one, run by a very nice woman:

she specializes in german shepards, but has labs and others as well.

I have a 12 year old beagle that you're more than welcome to have - She comes with all shots and 100lbs of food!

Of course that's my wife's dog, so I'll be leaving with her! :eek2:

My dog is a 4 year old Chocolate lab. Can't go wrong with a lab, good luck in your search.

Go in between with a Boykin Spaniel.

I do not want to jack this thread, or piss on Lab Rescue, BUT:

A year ago yesterday I had to put my Lab down. My shepard became became lonely after a few weeks, and the wife and I decided to rescue a Lab. We are dog people, and it just seemed like the right thing to do. After many recommendations, Lab Rescue was chosen.

VERY long story short, ( and I know I'm the rule to the exception) I have a extremely troubled 4 year old black lab that hates me. Loves my wife to death, but literally barks, runs and craps at the near site of me. Been through Lab Rescue, been through trainers, doctors etc.. he's just a troubled, abused dog. Which I've grown to live with but would caution any of my fishing buddies who are thinking about adopting. He's brought more stress in my house than I ever imagined.

One more point, that Lab Rescue does not check... after months of guessing, and a very expensive doggy ophthalmologist, Echo is blind in one eye. Which pissed me off to no end. I let Lab Rescue have it. That's really something that should be addressed before adoption happens. His blindness certainly has something to do with his rearing, and is probably a major cause of his hatred for me and skiddishness.

All for adoption, just know what your getting into, first.

Hoppocket, a call to Cesar Milan is in your future.
Really though sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing. You hate to hear about things like that.

Try Petfinder.com Great organization. Type in the dog you think you like and the breed comes up where you can look at it. I got my last dog there, and turned out to be a great dog.

My family adopted a dog from this rescue in August of 2009. They impressed me as being a clean well run outfit. Check them out they may have what you are looking for.

And you don't have to go so small with terriers either. We were in much the same situation as you when our Malamute passed away. We decided to give the medium terriers a try and have a great 45 pound wheaten terrier. Pet finder as mentioned above has quite a number of terriers if you can wade through all the pit bulls and jack russells.
