The plan this year is to do a LOT more fishing off shore so I have a question. What kind of line does the board prefer on their 50 wides, standard fiftys(yes i still have a couple of these) and last the mighty 80 wides?
what pound test??
what brand line ???
what color blue green clear ???
mono or braid???
The last question is the best how do you guys rig your trap rigs( the 80wide bent butts??
Thanks rick

Rick,
I've been going with straight 80 pound Momoi on my 50 wides. I don't have any 80's.
If you want a bent butt rig/80 for use as a planer, get a heavy braided line for this application. No need for wire, the braid works well and is easier to handle.
A lot of folks like the dacron and then mono since you can replace the mono only when it needs replacing but I know this set up can be expensive up front...and I have not had a need for additional capacity on the 50 wides than what I get with the 80 pound mono as a main line. As for color, I go with clear or the Blue from Momoi. I stay away from the bright green/yellow line, just a personal preference.
Hope to see you out there...

60 lb Momoi on the 50's and 100lb on the 80's for me...as for the trap rigs, I do not use them in OC but did in Hatteras years ago. I used a 18'' section of cable made in to a "bowtie" and secure with a rubber band......have nothing but the mono showing from the bait. Personally I do not think this is really needed for big tuna, but others will disagree for sure.

Rick:
50 lb blue diamond momoi on my 50's works just fine for me no problem.
80 lb same on my 80's

I use 50 # Premium Ande clear on 30 wides 80 # Premium Ande clear 50 wides and 100 # Premium Ande clear on 80 wides
Bingo! Perfect answer. Except that I like to use a Hi-Vis on 3 of my 80's (Shotgun and 2 long riggers) so I can see them while fishing wwb's for bluefin.

I guess I'm old skool ..... I still use dacron by woodstock, green dot or gudebrod, with 300 yards power pro braid top shot, that gives me 700 to 900 yards per reel. I do this because I was spooled by a bluefin on a 30 with only 500 yards ...... 30's get 50, 50's get 80, 80's get 100 pound test. Why, you ask. because Mono is like fishing with an elastic band.

50's- 8o lb clear momoi
80-s- 130 clear momoi
Planer rig- 300-400 yds 130lb momoi->100 yds 200lb braid->50-75yds 130lb momi> leader
The reason I get the clear momoi is because I buy in bulk and use the extra for leaders for inshore and mahi.
Also i do have the 150lb dacron> 130lb momoi clear on an 80 I use for marlin and I like that set up as well.

Yup on getting spooled, thats why I switched to the 80 lb braid backing, got spooled by a BFT in hatteras in Feb. People say braid is expensive, but if you trailer down to hatteras, rent a room for a couple nights, fuel the boat up, couple dozen hoo's, then get spooled, that 100 $ braid backing giving you 3-400 more yards isn't so expensive anymore, compared to a lost fish

You got me Rich! Busted again. I'm old school though. I like the stretch of mono, gives some cushioning. I also like snap swivels and long leaders over wind-ons most of the time (except when trying to be stealthy for bluefins). I just consider leadering an art form. Running the boat and rigging baits gets boring. But let me grab the leader on a 200# bluefin or mako, or 500# Blue Marlin. Now that's fun. Anyone can wind a fish in and just about anyone can gaff a fish, but knowing exactly how much pressure you can put on your leader, when to hang on and when to let go, now that takes some practice.
