What water temperature are we looking for in a few weeks for the crabs to start running?

JMO low to mid 50's for potters and upper 60's low 70's into the creeks... still gotta couple months. I had my pots out at the line last year around late May, and it wasn't worth the effort with low temps and mucho rain. We need a good dry spell with some warmer temps to see what we did a few years ago.

Last year was late because it was so darn cold. I always hold out for 65* for the creeks to use traps. Seems the trotlines start around 70* maybe a little higher. Earliest you'll get in the creeks is about the first week in May.

If you remember, last spring was somewhat cold, and certainly wet. We caught some upper bay creek crabs, very shallow, end of May.

FWIW: Water temp on the Susquehanna Flats today was reported to be 49*.
Not bad considering all the snow melt flowing down the river.
I personally think (hope) there will be worthwhile catching in the southern tribs by mid May.

It depends where you take the water temperature in the flats. The Sussy side will be MUCH colder than the Northeast river side. The Sussy is wide and deep and the North east is smaller and shallow which warms quicker from the sun. We are supposed to have rain for the next three days. That will add a lot of fresh water to the bay along with melting snow. Hard to tell how the season will start. The shad run should start soon..........Gary

Jim, I thought your place was super shallow. It does look like your motor is trimmed up though.
I am going to make it a point to get over that side. Give me a feature to look for.
