My brother used to do that in Upper Michigan while fishing for salmon. He used a 'casting float' which was made from clear plastic. It worked well. I hope that helps.

Several guys will run flies on a leader behind a hookless surface plug. The ones who talk seem to do well.

ive seen those floats that you fill with water to get different buoyancy. also adding split shot to get distance and depth

I've been throwing a fly on a light 6' 6" spinning out fit for a couple of years now. I use 10 lb. test power pro and crimp a 1/8th splitshot just ahead of the smallest ball bearing swivel I could find on the other side of the swivel I tie on ~ 3 to 4 feet of 12 lb. flourocarbon leader and use a loop knot to tie on a clouser minnow. I have had the most success with schoolie rockfish on hard outgoing tides both at the Narrows bridge and the Gwynns Island reef. I just let out the line slowly with the flow tying to keep the fly as deep as is possible. Gamomcv

A fly or small jig on a 15-18 inch leader behind a surface popper can be deadly at times on stripers and blues. Remove all the hooks from the popper except for the tail treble and tie the leader to the bend in one of the hooks on the treble.

Also some folks tie a dropper fly above metal jigs like stingsilvers and also above leadhead jigs like bucktails and bass assassins.
