I am finally getting around to installing my anchor trolley and had a few questions. What size and length line do people recommend for the anchor line?
And how do people store their anchors to avoid tangles and such?

Thanks,
Thomas

Let me start.

I have a home made anchor line spool to drop the anchor very fast because I fish in deep water. I sometimes carry a 150’ of anchor line to drop the anchor in 50-90’ of water in the middle of the bay in case of emergency. I have anchored in 45’ water if I remember correctly.

My anchor line is 3/16” nylon braided line and I carry a 3.5lb grappling anchor (from BassPro). The 3.5 grappling anchor will anchor the kayak very securely in wind of 20MPH in 30’ of water. I lost so far two 3.5 grappling anchor in the rock pile areas even though I connect the anchor lines correctly to the anchors- I used a 30#-40# test mono line as initial break-away line.

I also have a 1.5lb grappling anchor. The 1.5 lb grappling anchor did not work at the wind of 12-15mph in 12’ of water at all. But it works most of the time at wind under 8MPH in 12’ of water.

If you are fishing shallow water, under 12’ and protected area you can use an 1.5 lb anchor (from Dicks). When I use 1.5 lb grappling anchor, I carry a 20’ long 3/16” braided line without a spool. I just deploy all 20’ of line in the water regardless the depth (under 12’).

If you fish in the shallow water and protected water you may use a polypropylene twine (thicker and less tangling problem). Polypropylene twine is naturally buoyant. Simply tie the polypropylene twine on the anywhere on the kayak. When you retrieve, paddle backward and grab the (floating) anchor line.

You can use a small foam block as an anchor line spool in the shallow and protected water.

i stopped using the grappling type anchor and went to a 4lbs downrigger weight holds well in fast current and doesn't snag and stick in the rocks. a window sash weight if you can find one works also. i usually don't anchor in deeper water so 75' of rope is fine for me, 3/16 nylon is plenty to hold you.

Thank you for your advice. I installed my anchor trolley this weekend, well mostly, need to install the zig zag cleat. I already had a 3.5 pound grappling anchor s.o I will use that for the time being. I did buy 3/16 nylon I have a 100 feet but will probably cut it down. I am in the process of re-rigging my boat for the spring and changing a few things. I will post pics when it is all "finished."
