Sat.,
We start around the 320 overboard in the warm water 70-72. Not much life so start trolling north working in and out. Around 9:00 at the 514 the bar goes off and bring a 90 lb. BFT to the boat. Not the one we are looking for so we release him. Keep working north, around 13:00 right long goes down and bring a very feisty 50 lb BFT to the boat for another release. Ride around for a good while watching most everybody else hooked up but no luck.
Around 14:30 we hear Jimmy- K saying big BFT airing it out on the 448, thanks for the numbers Jimmy !!! Work that way and don't see it there but find birds and Tuna about 1/4 away. As soon as we get there the bar gets hit and breaks off and then both long riggers go down and the reel is screaming. Luclully that’s where we had the tiagra 80w and the fights on. We hooked up 15:10 and at 16:00 put a 66" in the boat. Then get the other fish, same size, for a release and head to the barn.
Sun.,
Start at the 380 and way overboard, the water has pushed down and out. Not much happening but hear of a YFT bite up the way so hear that direction. Around the 515 in 70 degree water both short riggers go down and we boat 2 YFT about 30 lbs. Get hit again buy YFT but only land 1 out of 3.
Troll around for good while then hear Danny on the point runner say that large BFT are busting about a mile ahead of him, Thanks Danny !!! We are only a couple hundred yards away so troll that direction, didn’t get far when the bar goes off again and breaks off, crap. While we where cranking the bar in we get two drifter bites on the long riggers. Thank God they hit the long riggers with the 80s again because they are large BFT. Hook up at 13:15. Fight the fish to the boat at 15:45 and it's a big SLOB.
So here we are. 3 of us in 24 Albemarle with 300 + fish along side. My thinking is we better release it for fear of getting swamped trying to get it on board. My buddy Darius, who has tons more experience than me says we can do it. We stick her with 3 gaffs and with a little help from a wave drag her over the side without sinking our boat. Needless to say we were all very happy. I don't know the weight yet but it was 85" long and fat so I'm guessing 320-330. Fish of a lifetime on a small boat.
It's was great weekend with great fishing.
I'm whipped but can't wait to go again.
